I need some advise. I bought my first horse trailer. It's a 1981 wilkins 2 horse straight haul. It has a lot of rust so i had the walls completely replaced and some other fixing done including making the centre post rwmovable in order to fit my mare in. I loaded my mare and unfortunately its to short by 6-8 inches to fit her. I was so excited to redo and upgrade this trailer and now I can't use it.
I'm not having any luck reselling it to break even.
Can i have another 8-10 inches added to the back of the trailer? Is that safe?

of course it can be done, we put a man on the moon, but you mentioned resale value, unless you really know what you are doing you will be making the trailer worth less, I would guess that the cost of doing this would be greater than just buying a bigger trailer, at least if you have to ask.

Is there specifications to how far the tires need to be from the rear of the trailer? I love the trailer and if this is an option, i would happily do it.

The only specs are that when fully loaded, the tongue will be carrying approximately 15% of the total weight. Trailer manufacturers take the physics into account when they determine axle placement. Too little tongue weight, and the trailer will fishtail.

If by adding length you are shifting the horse's weight rearwards, along with the new actual trailer weight added, I would suggest being careful. Very careful.
