I own a 2005 Logan LQ trailer that needs to be repainted.  It is heavily oxidized due to sun damage.  Has anyone repainted a galvanized steel trailer and what precautions did you take?  I'm concerned about the galvanization being sanded off while removing the oxidized paint.

I'm not even sure a regular auto body shop can do this due to size (36' long nose to tail).  I haven't yet contacted Logan but would consider taking it back to the factory to be repainted to ensure the integrity of the galvanization.

In case anyone is following this thread looking for the same information, I did talk to Logan.  They use a self-etching PPG-brand primer.

Still hoping to hear from someone who has repainted a galvanized trailer.....

you dont need to go all the way down to the metal, or at least you should not if there is no major body damage and the manufacterer did decent prep to begin with, as long as you dont have any of the galvainzation flaking off it is pretty hard to get off unless you try to sand the entire trailer to bare metal.  do good prep work primer all bare surfaces and paint it,  Should go fine

another not is that the galvanized portion you can see are nowhere near as important as the parts you cant paint or sand, ie in the cracks, welds and undersides.  this is where rust normally starts and then typically grows out to where you can see it.
