Hello

We are planning to upgrade our horse trailer in the next few months. We are looking for a 3 horse aluminum bumper pull. Our truck can pull 10,500 lbs but does not have the payload capacity to handle a gooseneck comfortably. We would need an equalizer hitch as without it the tongue weight would be an issue. Ideally it would have a rear tack. Our truck is pulling a 3600 lb trailer now and as we live in the mountains I feel like I would not want to pull anything much heavier than that. We live far from the nearest trailer dealer so I would like to do as much research as possible before travelling to look at trailers.

We are looking at either the Exiss Express XT or the Exiss 730. I have found a used XT for a pretty good price. The 730 appears to be the same trailer but with a bigger tack room. However the 3H Express XT has 3500 lb axles, vs the 730 has 5200 lb axles. This despite there only being a 320 lb weight difference between the trailers (3100 lbs vs 3420 lbs).

Fully loaded with tack, water and 3 horses, I figure we would be just under 7000 lbs incl trailer if we bought the XT. Most of our trips would be short distance with only one or two horses, but we do occasionally do back country trips with all 3 (rough roads). Does anyone have experience with the XT? Are 3500 lb axles enough or should we spend the extra $$ on the 730? The price difference is significant.

Thanks for your advice

Lots of good questions. A couple of other points to ponder-
A) I believe you'll find the 730 is a true 7'W, where the Express is 6'8". The 730 is supposed to be a notch better trailer.
B) Axles- if I'm remembering correctly, the 5200# axle is a heavier beam than the 3500. Your calculations are correct in that the 3500s are fine. But the 5200 will be heavier duty.
C) Brakes- the brakes on the heavier axle are rated for more stopping power. Mountains you say?? 1/2T truck you say??
D) Yes- get a weight distribution hitch. Will make all the difference. Especially as long as a 3H bumper pull is.
E) Remember- weight balance is the responsibility of the driver. Too little tongue weight will cause a dangerous sway. Be careful loading only 2 horses in the rear 2 stalls. It can get dicey. 1 horse needs to be middle. 2 horses are best at 1 & 3.
