My old roof top air conditioner has quit cooling. It takes the refrigerant that only licensed A/C people can buy. I'm thinking of mounting a 110 window unit under the gooseneck. What size unit would I need to cool a small dressing room and the gooseneck area? It is insulated with spray on foam. Can anybody tell me the pros and cons of going this route?

I'm gonna GUESS that a window air conditioner is not probably rugged enough for the constant movement that an RV type experiences. Also, the shroud design on a RV style protects from the full on spray blast that your proposed location would experience. Just my opinion.

As far as sizing,simply look at the tag on the current one and read the BTU capacity. I agree with Dbarnes that a window unit probably won’t last as long as a RV unit. RV units are not that expensive when you consider that it will last longer than a window unit.

Just my opinions- First, you'll likely never find a "surplus" AC. No one takes them off until they quit working. Second- in this part of the country I've seen a lot of ACs mounted in the area like you describe. It kills resale on a nice trailer, but it works fairly well. The OP is correct in that they aren't made for that type of vibration, but run for a while. The rooftop units are generally 13,500 BTUs, and overcool a small insulated dressing room. Also watch clearance to your truck bed.

Yes, it can be done but should it? IMO, NO!. To go with what others have mentioned, the heat generated from the unit will cause problems to the paint and that heat transfers up to the nose of the trailer where you are sleeping, it will leak unless you weld in braces and seal it correctly, you still have to run it thru a breaker box and a converter box if using a generator as it would be easy to make the trailer a transformer with 220 volts running thru it, and they take up a lot of room outside the trailer. Do you have room to avoid hitting the pulling vehicle? And it looks like crap IMO.

I plan to build my new trailer with a cut in for the window type ac unit under the gooseneck. They are easier to work on, cheaper and easier to find. As someone said I the box of the units say how many square feet the manufactter recommmends. as far as ruggedness I have seen many semi trucks with window ac units mounted to the back of the cab, I cant imagine that would be much different from the front of a horse trailer

I think that you should buy not a big air conditioner. I understand that there is not so much space. Moreover it is insulated with spray on foam, so shouldn't buy powerful air conditioner, but there is a problem that you can buy for example two air conditioners with similar sizes, but different power. So one would cool fast, but the second one would need more time to make the same cold. So first it would be better to ask or to call air conditioning installation engineers and they will answer your question.
