I am a newbie and getting ready to purchase my first trailer. I found a used Sundowner yr 2000 on Craigslist that I am interested in purchasing. However I have read about issues with some early 2000 models of Sundowner on rust. I live in So Cal (& so is the trailer) so rust is usually not an issue here. Should I be concerned?

Any 18 year old trailer should be thoroughly inspected for structural damage. The floor that year was coated in plastic.

It had a tendency to corrode the floor with urine trapped between the coating and the metal. If the coating was stripped off, you're good to go, since you'll be able to inspect the floor.

I have a 2000 Sundowner 3h GN. I had a section of the steel frame replaced three years ago. I still have it and use it.

I don't know about the plastic floor lining, but I do know that Sundowner used an inferior powder coating to prevent corrosion between the steel frame and aluminum skin. The coating broke down and a lot of trailers had serious corrosion issues. I had a 2000 and was lucky to sell it, with full disclosure, to someone who was willing to replace the frame work.
I would avoid Sundowners for that reason.
I have had all aluminum Exiss trailers since then.

Had a 2000 and a 1999.  I am aware of the inferior coating that was on the frame, however I didn't experience this problem.  The coating would trap moisture between the coating and the steel and cause premature rusting and failure.  I do not know if this occurred on everyone or just in a particular timeframe/production run.

On my 2000 I was powerwashing the floor and I saw it start to ripple with the pressure of the water. That gave the indication that the floor coating wasn't adhered to the the aluminum floor.  I was able to rip all the floor coating out in less than 15min and could see that urine had seeped under the floor coating being trapped and caused holes in the aluminum floor approx 1/8" in dia.  I would assume that had I crawled under the trailer I would have seen that.

Both trailers were excellent trailers.  If you decide to purchase the 2000, thoroughly inspect the trailer for these two issues.
