I just bought a used two horse slant and my goodness, the step up is high.  When I looked at it, it must have been parked by a mound of dirt (I don't think they did that intentionally, it was backed up to a fence line in a trailer parking area).  I am not sure I want to invest in a ramp, but which manufacturer out there has step ups that are lower for the horses? This one, the top of a full grown horse's knees come up to the trailer floor.  I have to say I was parked on a slight incline but I remember my old WW step in was low and easy for all horses to navigale. I have a pony and she had to jump into the trailer.

Recommendations?

I blocked my trailer axles to get hitch clearance. The floor is 19 inches high, so horses have to jump into the trailer.

I always make sure the trailer is off pavement when UN loading horses, to keep them from slipping when backing off.

Thank you for your reply!!!   I am not sure I want my pony jumping in all the time--esp if the mats are wet... I have a straight load trailer with a ramp.  The stalls are just too big for the pony, she sits on the bar, then if I have a fast stop, she goes all the way to the front..  That was why I bought a slant load so she would ride better in that, not be buffeted around.

Do you think I can modify that trailer to put a butt chain where she would be more confined--or better supported would be the correct term?

My super old straight load Trailet, had adjustable butt chains, so i could adjust where the chain needed to be for each horse.  I miss that old trailer, it was one that hat the crappy steel where the top would fall off the frame after awhile.  It had a lot of nice adjustments.  My straight load is a Featherlite all aluminum.   i could sell the slant and just keep this one if it could be modified.

JSBy … I'm sure a local metal fabricating shop could install some sort of chain attachment to your trailer. IF … You were specific as to what you were looking for.

Pictures and marking your trailer will help the shop figure their time and materials. The more sure the shop is of your design the less extra cost they will build into their pricing.

Go to Menard's/Lowes/Home Depot..and get some insulating foam for plumbing. I think it is about 2"..wrap your butt chain and duck tape it all the way to protect your horse's rear..

Thanks for all your replies and help!!  I was at the QH congress today and talked to the Featherlite dealer and he said that they could fabricate different areas for butt bars so i could put in various sizes of horses. He showed me the new butt bars and some other features they have .. my trailer is the 25 year edition from 1999.  Love that trailer and have had it for a long time, so it's nice to see I can get it modified to fit my ponies in, and still carry the giant 16.3 TB to the vets when I need to take her. She is 28 and doing well, but this trailer is about the only one she fits in, she is a very long horse.

After talking to the fabrication guys at my trailer shop, asking about both the addition of a ramp to my current step up and mods to my straight load, I decided to purchase a used trailer off this site that already had a ramp and sell the step up.   Little bit of extra work, but for me, well worth it.  Thanks all to responded and HTW for having the ability to choose from a lot of great trailers!!
