I've been out of horses for a couple of years, but want to get back into things soon. I was told my truck didn't have the power it should for my trailer... but I've never had a problem with my combo.

I have a 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 5.7L Hemi 4X2 and a CM Dakota 3 horse bumper pull. Is this still a safe combo? Eventually I want to get a 2500, however if I could hold off for another year that would be nice!

Power to pull a trailer should not be the concern, ability to control and stop a trailer are far more important.

Estimating the trailer weight at 3500 lbs, three horses at 3000 lbs, tack for three horses at 300 lbs your tailer weight is now 6800 lbs, estimating tongue weight at 18% gives a tongue weight of 1224 lbs .  According to Rams website your truck has a tow capacity of 5000 lbs and a payload capacity of 1710 lbs.  Meaning you are 1800 lbs over the tow capacity and you only have 486 lbs payload capacity left for people, fuel and other stuff loaded in the truck.

I've never known half ton trucks to be much more then passenger vehicles on steroids so I'm probably biased against them for towing.  I'm also the type that has been ribbed for using a 1.5 ton truck to pull my trailer when the guy parked next to me is pulling the same size or larger trailer with a 1 ton.  But I'm also confident that in a panic stop or other manuver my trailer will not be controlling the truck.

Don't take this personal or as an attack, that is not my intention.  Just trying to be helpful.

Thank you for that explanation! And no offense taken, that is the info I was looking for.

I definitely would not haul 3 horses with my truck. Ive only hauled one horse with that trailer in the past and that may be pushing my luck still. Until I upgrade to a larger vehicle I won't be hauling more than one, if I haul at all.

You should be fine as long as you use your head and use your brain to run your right foot.  A lot of people can get by just by driving carefull. Just remember that you have your whole life to get where you are going.
