I have seen anything from nothing to almost belly high.   I usually just put 3 or 4 inches in my trailer.  Most of my hauls are 2 hours or less.  I've also found that using the wood flakes as opposed to the really fine stuff works much better. It doesn't blow around when the windows are open.

We use 3/4 inches of fine flake shavings and I put some of the pellets in the area they pee for a little extra protection, also put old rolled up towels under 3rd stall partition and tack area wall, which has worked well. I hate starting vacation having to clean everything on tack and 3rd stall floors because of pee. Our trips are anywhere from 2- 10 hrs depending where we are headed

Funny you say that. I just did this today to keep the shavings out of my first stall and tack room. Went to the hardware store and found some landscape edging.

Usually, I use the least amount as possible....but for a recent trip up north for camping, I did make a nice comfy stall for my horse...reason, it was 112* and hot, so I put in a big flake of fluffy shavings, wetted them down...keep the horse's feet cool...worried about the heat from the burning AZ roads....there was probable 8" of shavings in the one stall...all was fine...shavings were dry by the time we got to our camp ground....

We only use a little bit to soak up any urine. Maybe I look at this differently because everyone else I know uses so much and I've never seen the point or heard a good reason why. Even in my stalls we only use a litte bit to absorb so clean up is quicker. I maybe put down 1"  down the middle for Geldings and more twoards the hind side for the mares. We haul 3 days a week for short runs of less than an hour and long trips on the weekends.
?There was a Biker and his passenger that told me I was number one by using hand signals a few years back when i wasnt using any shavings heading to a High School Rodeo with a trailer full. funniest moment ever once we figured out what had happened.
?I buy my shavings by bulf truck load and the consistency is always a little different.
