I'm putting together a tool box for trailer off basic items I may need road side. Examples... Tire wrench's, Jack, black tape, screw driver, etc. What other things would be good to have. Keep in mind I'm a gal so I am not super handy, but I'm pretty smart and can get by. I won't be rebuilding motors in the side of road but I can handle blown tires, basic writing, etc.

?I included safety triangles that divert traffic in the event of road lane blockage, trailer tire changing ramp, pieces of rope for tying things on the truck bed and varies size ratchet straps just to name a few things. It sure is nice to have what you need if stranded roadside.

Something I'm afraid I'm guilty of NOT doing is making sure you have the right size lug wrench for the trailer wheels. Probably the same as the tow vehicle but not necessarily. A socket and 1/2" ratchet handle works just as well if the ratchet handle is long enough or you can put a cheater on the ratchet handle.

I am going to take it one step farther, I carry a trailer aid type device, or a block of wood that you can drive up on and get the other tire off the ground.  Also I take a 12v impact that I have the charger wired to my trailer battery so it is always charged.  I bought the impact at Harbor freight for like $50 and it is a huge time saver when changing tires, you still need a tire iron but it is just much quicker.  The main thing is to make sure you wire it into your battery so it is aways charged, you can do this by adding a cigarette lighter to a storage compartment and just use the adapter.

Oh yeah an led lantern/flashlight combo is a good thing to mount in the trailer or the truck either way good to have one at night...

I have had trouble with battery powered hand tool when leaving them charged for long periods of time. It seems to cause the batteries to go bad, anyone else experience this?

The most important "must have" is a road service that will assist with horses. There will be a time when one can't handle the problem by the side of the road even if you were able to rebuild the engine. (Not all problems are engine related. I drove our truck & trailer off the road and got it stuck and jack-knifed )   see link below.

I highly recommend USrider. They answer the call with "Are you and the animals in a safe place?" There is no question about assisting with animals or Dually trucks, they will. Plus the person is covered, so if you're riding with someone their rig is covered. Or if your car is disabled, it's covered. (no need for AAA)

If you use this code AMB14833 both you and I get an extra month coverage. Join at usrider.org or 800-844-1409

What others have said is very true and correct. There are situations that you the driver and or pax must take care of yourselves and it must be done in a timely manner.
ALWAYS HAVE A FIRE EXSTINGUISHER AVAILIBLE ON THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE OF TRUCK.
Not all fires are engine fires, brakes and hay can catch fire. If there are 2 of you in the truck, one fights while the other as calmly and quickly evacuates the trailer. Evacuated people and horses must go INTO TRAFFIC. If your disabled truck and trailer are hit parts will go down range toward you if you are standing in front of your truck.
If in doubt about the safety of your place on the road, call 911, we would rather sit with our red and blues on to protect you and talk horses than write a traffic crash report.

As I read thru all of these replies, I was checking off if I had that item or not- and surprisingly I have all of the above, and I will ad that I also have flares. I hope I never need the Impact Wrench, or the portable battery charger, but you never know. The Jiffy Jack to pull the trailer up on is wonderful. I am also subscribed to US Rider and AAA RV Plus - can't be too cautious :) I have fire extinguishers in my LQ and in the horse trailer - might have to put one in the truck at someone's suggestion.

I figure if I have all of this stuff, I won't need it :) But who knows............

Change out all of your fuses with breakers and switch all of your llights to led unless you like fussing instead of horsing.

Also so as far as the batteries staying charged for the impact I have recently purchased  a Milwaukee brand impact that uses the same battery as the tools I take with me so I have a couple and I charge them when I get to where I am going it keeps them fresher.  But even with my old harbor freight one if I charged it once at the beginning of the year then after I use it is normally enough to substantially increase the speed of changing a tire

Your wheel blocks. We went to get my horse and our truck broke down. We had to take the trailer off one truck and attach to another one. So glad we had the blocks to keep the trailer from rolling.

I agree with many of the above mentioned items. I would include a trailer aid chock/jacking block. I have had one for years, and have used it countless times. I also carry electrical tape, a set of wire strippers, channel locks, and a small pair of screw drivers to fit the small screws on my trailer plug. I have had my spouse pull away from my trailer several times with the wiring plug still in the tow vehicle. Having a method to repair the connector has saved me several times. It never hurts to have multi tool (Leatherman) as well.
