Hello!

We are looking to buy a 4 horse trailer in the very near future (like this weekend near) With all the scammers I have seen that are trying to sell trailers out there I was wondering if y'all could give some tips on what to look out for. The two that we are going to look at this weekend are title in hand and supposedly in great condition. We have never made a major purchase from a private seller before so it's a little nerve racking. We're looking at a Hart and a Exiss. Would it be possible for someone to fake the title? What should be look for as in body condition? We want to pay with cashiers check so that the transaction is traceable. Any specifics on the bill of sale?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

what state are you from and what state are you looking at?   I think it would be very hard to fake a title, the main thing is make sure all the numbers match and if you are un sure of what to really be looking at in a new or used trailer , take someone with you that does.  lots of good deals out there but you need to be aware of what your looking at and also what mfg. some are good and some are bad

We live in Florida and are looking in Florida as well. We were just notified that the Hart was sold so we're looking at an Exiss.

With respect to trailer condition: Pull the mats and check for corrosion on the horse box floor. Get up on the roof and check the roof condition, ask if there are any leaks. Do a test drive to ensure it pulls well. While on the test drive, visit a scale to determine empty trailer weight and weight on the hitch (weigh truck with trailer, truck only and trailer only) - you want to ensure your intended tow vehicle is sufficiently rated to tow the trailer. Check the trailer brakes by applying the brake controller to activate the trailer brakes only and visually see that the brakes lock up. Pull the emergency pin on the trailer brakes and ensure the brakes lock up. Jack up each wheel and give them a spin and check if bearings are wobbly. Check the frame and trailer structure for any cracks in the welds. Crawl under the trailer and inspect the bottom of the floor. Check tire condition. Open and close every door on the trailer to check that the trailer is still square. Lots of things to check to satisfy yourself with the trailer condition. You may want to find a trailer inspection check list on the web to take with you, but above are a few of the important ones that can be checked. Happy trailer shopping. Don't get in a rush. And be suspect of a trailer that is priced way below market value. Regards, 3CW

Thanks! I will definitely make sure those things are checked. We knew the basics of what to check for but not the more extensive things. We've been looking for a while but mostly at dealers.

Exiss made after 2002 have problems, the sport models are the really troubled trailers.  Offer to meet or take it to a local trailer reapir shop and have them go over it with a fine tooth comb, you pay the bill and make sure they know they are working for you.  If that's not possible you might be able to find a company like  http://lemonsquad.com/used-car-inspections/rv   , they will travel to your location and give the vechicle a through going over.   I think the RV is best suited to the LQ trailer but you can always call and ask about other options.  Check the tires!  School yourself on how to read the date of manufacture on those, odn't trust the seller.  Read the post that says want to do what's fair in a trade...

After that comment I searched for reviews and we have decided to stay away from Exiss brand trailers. Thanks for raising the red flag on that. I was always under the impression that Exiss was a good brand.

If I was selling ...I would not accept a cashier's check ever. They are not like cash anymore, they can be stopped by the buyer for up to 3-7 days. Cash is the best way...

“You can cancel a Cashier’s Check (that hasn’t been paid) if it has been lost, stolen or destroyed, but you will have to wait 91 days from the date of issue.”

This is why if you as a seller do a transaction involving a cashier's check...do it during banking hours in the parking lot of a bank branch upon which the cashier's check was drawn, so you can walk it in and cash it...IMMEDIATELY...

Generally, cashier's checks must be made available by the next business day. However, because of the number of fraudulent and counterfeit checks now being passed, banks are beginning to place an extended hold on cashier's checks. A bank can only place a hold on the amount of the check deposited in excess of $5,000.

But if you are at a branch of the bank issuing the check...you can have that branch communicate with the issuing branch and then there shouldn't be a hold...as the holds are normally due to inter-bank operations (between two different banking entities)
