do any of you feed just oats to your horses?. I have fed Purina, TizWiz, and Nutrena horse feeds as well as some cheaper sweet feeds. It cost to much and often get moldy feed. I am thinking about feeding straight oats and maybe free choice minerals. Would welcome your thoughts.

Before there was fancy bag feeds that what people fed, oats and corn. I Assume that you mean that you are supplementing hay with oats for extra protein, it has worked for at least 100 years, so it should still work.one thing to consider is you may want to by crimped or rolled oats as it helps the horse get more out of them but they are more money. depending on how much you feed you may be money ahead buying a crimper

thank you both for the advise. This whole bagged grain thing has gotten to be quite a money pit. The fact that the old timers fed oats [for years] keeps popping up in my head. I think sometimes I just get caught up in the marketing. It is just amazing to go into TSC or Rural King and look at all the different Dog, Cat , and Horse feeds.

I just googled the Iowa State University equine department and googled what they recommended for a mixed feed for horses. OatsCracked cornBean mealSoy OilBeet shredsMineralsVitaminslimeAlfalfa pelletsI am doing this from memory but it makes a ton of feed and they (my local feed mill ) bag it for me. My last ton cost $411.00 and I feed 3 lbs per head twice a day. It cost about $1.25 per head per day.
