Went out to feed horses this morning. One of the geldings tail was gone. Where there once had been a long tail a short stub was in it's place. Horses are in a lot with pipe fencing. I started looking for the place the tail had gotten caught and could not fine a single tail hair anywhere. I expanded my search to the pasture and again not a single tail hair could be found. I know Halloween is near so wonder what happened to the tail....did a ghost come and take it? LOL! We have had horses for over 30 years and have never seen anything like this. Anyone have any ideas to where the tail is?

I have heard about people going in and cutting the hairs of the tail off.  They are selling it to people who make jewelry out of horses tail hair.  Could that be what happened?  Heard it is a real problem in some parts of the country.

I've read on other sites that it is becoming a problem that horses tails and manes are being stolen and sold to make jewelry. Are you close to the road and is the poor guy that's been scalped particularly friendly?

Was the tail cleanly cut off or pulled out and ragged looking? That will tell you what happened.

Just when one thinks that they've heard it all, that no one could muster up any more gall than some of what is read in the news these days, you hear of some moron with nerve enough and lack of brains to cut a strange horse's tail off in the dark!

If I'd caught them, they would have been the ones missing their "tails."

This has been happening in our part of the country too (WY) - sad but true. We were told that it is possibly people from Mexico who are selling it to unscrupulous buyers to make horse-hair items. Anything from belts, to hatbands to key rings and jewelry. They most likely have watched your place for awhile- looking for an opportunity. Contact local law enforcement- they may be able to help & may have more information. Meanwhile- don't leave your horses unattended at night in the pasture- if you have a way to bring them in, do so. Good luck!!

It was happening here in TN for quite some time.  White horses in particular were big targets because of the ability to dye the hair any color.  So sorry this has happened to you.

I took pictures and showed them around at work everyone thought it looked like it had been cut off. The entire tail was gone from tail bone down. I have seen horses tear out parts of their tail but they leave behind the hair that they tore out and never the whole tail. We do have a new hispanic population in our area that might be what happened. Kinda scares me that they would walk on our place and cut a tail off. We live off the road a little ways. The horse who lost his tail had the best tail. Thanks for input to this mystery. I believe it was cut off......

Scary to think some yahoos are on your property at night up to no good. Time for a big mean dog!

Couple of years ago friends had a goat stolen off their place in the middle of the night. They were asleep in the nearby house and never heard a thing. Because the 20 somethings who stole it boasted on Facebook about the theft all were busted and eventually the goat returned.

See - big mean dog or big mean owner with shotgun!
