Here is what I've used for the last several years, note that I replaced the water with baby oil so sweat doesn't effect it as bad, it does collect dust and dirt tho, so washing after use helps.

900 ml white vinegar
250 ml skin-so-soft
900 ml baby oil
1 pint (1/2 bottle) green bottle fly wipe
8 tablespoons citronella oil

shake well before each use, spray/wipe on your choice.

my recipe is for a quart spray bottle;  2 to 4 oz Skin So Soft, 1 oz eucalyptus oil, fill bottle with water, shake well before each use.

If the bugs are really bad, you will find me puffing on a cigar too.

I have a different homemade recipe that my Amish farrier gave me. It works temporarily. However, I have found a premise spray which is expensive but pretty effective at the barn and for spiders around the deck and pergola. Tempo

If you mean my farrier's spray, here is his recipe:

1 gallon vinegar

1 quart Repel-x

1 pint Wipe

18 oz. blue Dawn soap

1 quart water

Makes 2 gallons.

I've tried several home remedy sprays and nothing works, essential oils mixtures with vinegar, etc.  I finally found that Flysect Citronella works great on east coast flies.  The key is to apply it morning/eve and use a grooming brush to work it down to the skin.

I keep a tiny spray on 98% deet spray repellant in my pommel bag. Deer flies were still bothering my horse, so spayed a bit on the poll. Keep the nuisance flies off.

I just put my horse in the barn all day, she is too fat anyway... when I trail ride if the bugs are bad I use people spray it is the longest lasting thing I found.. I have bathed the horse in citronella shampoo then applied ample amounts of repelex, (I hate chemicals) and found that only works an hour at best.... just stay inside when it is bug season,,,,ride at night or in the early morning...

I make my own, 1:1:1 of apple cider vinegar/water/orange Pinesol (I make a gallon at a time)it is not as good as a permethrin commercial flyspray, but it does help for regular daily use.
