My 8 year old MFT cut his lower, rear canon about two weeks ago. Its mostly filled in but the edges of skin are further apart than the original cut.
I know that getting the skin to grow over wounds on horses lower legs can be difficult. Proud flesh is always a risk. Anybody have any experience that worked or suggestions?
I was considering iodine ointment to keep the skin soft and bandaging it. It has been unwrapped til now.

try sugar paste or honey under a wrap. mix sugar w/ a little saline until it forms a paste, or just use honey. smear it on the wound, cover w/ a non stick telfa pad then wrap padding over that, then vet wrap. it will be more work, and you'll have to change the dressing daily but it should help healthy tissue grow back faster.

Have used a product through the years called EquAide. It is relatively expensive for a small jar, but you use it sparingly and it works very well to prevent proud flesh. Google it and you can purchase from distributor.

I'd heard of the healing effects of honey, but not sugar till recently. When my gelding got injured while camping down in TN, the vet who answered the emergency visit told me that sugar is one item that should always be included in an emergency kit. It inhibits the growth of bacteria on a wound. I googled it, and found lots of factual information confirming that advice.

My vet suggested using Adolph's Meat Tenderizer when my mare got a serious wound on the lower leg using vet wrap daily and changing the bandage and packing with the Adolph's, this was too prevent the growth of proud flesh. Just don't over do how long the leg stays wrapped, air needs to help dry up the wound...good luck

Our gelding once sustained a bad tensile wire cut on the heel bulb portion.We healed this fairly quickly considering how deep it was,with Eclipse wound products,the cleanser and the wound treatment,and wrapping it.A foot is a pain to wrap and keep a bandage on,we've done that TWICE now with him! A leg wound is a pain too,trying to keep something on.Vetwrap will usually stay put.Good luck!

I've used Underwoods. Don't have to wrap the wound then. Just spray it on and dust it with baking powder. Works great. Google Underwoods horse Medicine.
