This has been an awful summer here,heat-wise and bug loaded, too, after all of the flooding of the Delta region of our state from the Mississippi.

I have noticed that 2 of my horses have rubbed the hair off of themselves in several spots on their hindquarters, sides, neck and chest.I bathed them with a shampoo by Healthy Hair (DermaClean) and sprayed the patches with some Fungaway spray and Benadryl spray.I have heard good things about the Eqyss Micro-Tek Medicated Spray, has anyone tried this,or does anybody have other suggestions?

Ridgegirl;
Hey... that sounds like rain-rot. Have you tried Vetricyn after bathing them? or, try some Shapley's MTD on the affected areas. We've had some issues up here, but not that bad, so far.

No,it's not rainrot.I know what that looks like, hair comes out in tufts and they don't rub. It's from all of these terrible bugs that we have here, and besides,it has only rained twice all summer. Not enough dampness to cause rainrot,LOL!

I did try some Veterycin,however.

sounds like allergies; you might try giving them benadryl (generic is fine) to see if they can quit scratching long enuf to let some hair come back. When I have used it for a horse with allergies, I have given 10 caps once a day (that would be 250 mg) and it did not even make the horse sleepy, just cut out the itching. Also aloe gel or benedryl gel. This has been a very wicked weather summer for sure. best wishes to your horses for speedy recovery.
oops see you have used benadryl spray....I like the gel better tho, it is very soothing.

Truthfully, the only thing i have found that keeps flies away and heals the skin is Camppho-Phenique. It's a human anti itch, bug bite, antiseptic that calms the itches and pain. You can find it in any pharmacy in the first aid aisle. Put about 5 drops of the liquid into your palm, add about 1 Tsp of Vaseline and mix. Then smear all over the hot, sore spots. A little goes along way and the flies/bugs hate the smell. Calm Coat + vaseline works too. Mega-Tec is great for hair regrowth.

Thanks for the tip,I know about Campho Penique, having grown up in this same Delta region all my life with thousands of bugs! Also I'll try the Benadryl gel as I have a ton of that already.

Have heard good things about Micro Tek,I have used their rehydrant spray and really like it,plus the Avocado spray for manes, tails and coat too. It's a pricey line and Tractor Supply just started carrying it (and got rid of a lot of their other economical lines,go figure.) I'll see if I can find it online  cheaper.

I just got a tin of Dr Watkins salve at Cracker Barrel; active ingredients are camphor and menthol. I use it on my neck for pain relief. Think I will try it on my horse tomorrow.

Instead of a hit or miss method perhaps it would be better to have a vet look at it and maybe take a sample or two for testing. Then you can find the appropriate treatment. It can get costly trying one product after another.

We have seen an increase in pin worms and thread worms in NE Kansas which will also cause extreme rubbing. Ivermectin is not that effective in Pinworms treatment. Might want to do a Panacur Powerpack if you susupect this could be the cause.

Was at the vets office a few weeks ago talking to my vet about sheep wormers when we got on this topic about the horses. As in sheep, horse wormers are becoming less effective too. Pretty scary to think about we are losing our defense against parasites from over-use of dewormers.... as was recommended by pharmacutical companies to worm every other month. Now I am hearing to worm just in the summer months. Hard to know which is the correct decision, so now I take samples to be tested to see if my worming program is effective.

Hope you get the itch cured.

I believe when it cools off enough for the mosquitoes to lessen and horse flies, ect to slack off,it will get better. This area is hell on wheels because of the bug population in summer but this year was worse than any.

I started using NU-Stock on our Border Collie that was plagued with hot spots at certain times. We tried everything that even might work including trips to the Vet with no results. This NU-Stock has worked better for us better than anything we have used on dogs and horses. Bought at feed store $12 a tube.

Here in Norcal, my vet told me to give Ivermectin once monthly now and see if that helps my horse. He is rubbing the top of his tail off and is "itchy" every where else on his body. The vet said they think it is a worm that is causing this and not allergies. That the Ivermectin is the only way to go. Dr. said to worm every 4-6 weeks with it and see if that helps. I have tried the bathing and the ointments to no avail. So, am gonna worm him tomorrow and then 4 weeks from now and see if it does the trick.

Well,I am sure that's not it,in my case.Just can't describe how really bad the bugs are, here in the Delta, and especially this year after we had 1 million acres in Arkansas flooded by the Mississippi.Unbelievable.

Not to disregard your vet, but the practice he is recommending is the reason why we are getting parasite resistant worms. Each parasite has a lifecycle and this method is not treating any specific parasite. It would be more beneficial and less costly to you if you knew exactly the parasite you are fighting and then select the appropriate anthelmetic and duration to treat the horse.

He did tell me what parasite it is that is causing the rubbing out of the dock of the tail and the mane. I have CRS on occasion! Can't remember which it was. He did say that the Ivermectin is the only thing that will treat it. Anyways, I usually only deworm every 4 months and do the rotations. So, I am going to de-worm in 4 weeks from now and then another 4 from then and see if that works.
Anyone try any of the feed through fly stuff? That is the only other way I can see that would drasticly kill the fly population. The neighbor has cows next door so the flies are worse than usual.
