Removing the shoes makes this much more difficult. It doesn't happen often, but when it does, we remove the hot nail, pour some turpentine in the hole. Make sure it goes all the way thru. Then replace the nail with one that is not in the quick. This seals the hole and prevents dirt and debris from getting in the hoof. Occasionally, we'll file the top of the hole where the hot nail was, with some puddy.
Now that you have removed the shoes it is very difficult to keep dirt out of the hoof. If there is any dirt in the hoof where the hot nail was, you MUST get it all out. This means opening the hot nail hole somehow and filling it with something to disinfect the hole. Then keep the hole clean while it heals. I'd suggest packing the hoof with Epsom Salts Poulice, and keep it packed until all of the infection is gone.
