Is there an issue if there are mouse droppings in my hay? Transfered hay from storage barn to horse barn yesterday and found a lot of droppings in the bed of my truck when done. I always shake out the hay before feeding it to the horses but can they still be eating some of the nastys? Will it harm them?

On the worst case scenario mouse droppings can have salmonella or listoporosis which can also be transferred to you. I'd look to see if you can locate the bales with the most feces. More than likely some of the bottom bales had a few mouse nests.

Yes, Leptospirosis can cause a disease called moon-blindness. And salmonella can make the horse colic. Both of which are hard to treat. Like I said, I would look for the offending bales and burn them. You will be able to see the holes or run-pockets in the bales.

Mouse droppings can cause,among other things,a viral infection called Haunte virus which can be fatal to humans.Be careful when sweeping up wherever there are very many of them and wear a mask.it's best to vaccuum them up,also wearing a mask.(I hope I have the spelling of the name right.)
