I've always given my horses serveral shots spread out over several weeks for the annual vaccines.  Always figured I hated getting too many different vaccines at the same time. This year because of the budgets I decided to try one of the combined vaccines. And used the Prestige V +WNV.  This was cheaper than buying several individual vaccines.

The horses are still standing and looking for treats.  So it didn't kill them.

What are your thoughts on all in one Combination Vaccines vs several shots?

We  have used the combo type for years with no complications............one advantage I believe is they are on 24/7 turnout and the moving about and head up and down grazing etc helps them not get as sore......figure they would rather be stuck one or twice than many times....they are not needle shy and hope to always remain that way, as a needle shy one can get kinda salty!

We've also given them the "5 way" for many years. It started out being bought from and administered by our vet, now we do it ourselves.

I've always given the combo shots because I'm a nurse, and, have given shots for many years so it wasn't a big deal to me.Plus, they were far less expensive than having a vet give them all. This year I bought a vaccine with E/WE,tetanus,flu/rhino and west nile.We have our horses vaccinated for rabies but a vet has to do this here.

I just bought my own vaccine this year..the 4-way. Vet will be needed later for coggins but I can do something like an injection myself. Horses are just fine.

After losing a horse years ago to complications from spring shots, I now split them, with vet giving them one month apart. I have one horse who reacted to vaccines by walking incessantly in a circle with a blank look in his eyes. He gets 2 grams of bute before vet comes, and has been fine for the past several years. This year my 22 year old mare became very lethargic for the first time after the first round of shots. Temp O.K., respiration a bit elevated. 2 grams of bute and she was fine. She will now get bute before the vet comes for round 2. They get East/West/Tetanus/Flu/ Rhino on first visit. Next visit they will get Potomac Horse Fever and Rabies.
