OK,since I am on here discussing my horse's hoof condition that I will learn the truth about on Wednesday, probably,I want to ask everyone: if you feed a hoof supplement, which ones are really good and worth the cost and which ones are so-so?Red also has a hoof wall deformity from an old wire injury that involved the coronary band some years back, and I would like to see if perhaps a hoof supplement would help.Other than a side wall crack, which I have been told will never grow back out smooth again,it may not even be worth it to try. Thanks everybody.

I've seen good results after a year or so when clients use farriers formula.   it won't work for all horses but it does seem to help most who use it.

I've had good results with Farriers Formula on my QH mare that hit a gate with her front left hoof. At the time I thought she just nicked her coronet band. But about 6 weeks later she looked like a horse with white line disease, but the vet confirmed it was just a deep tissue injury as a result of the hard impact to the bottom of gate edge. It took 5 months for it to grow all the way out, pretty fast considering the depth of hoof that broke off. Odd thing is that she is shod and this still happened.

I had to go to hot shoes with clips to keep the shoe on as she didn't have a side wall to nail into on the outer edge of her hoof. Wish I would have taken pics, but didn't think about it at the time.

And as a bonus, her brumby style mane actually grew longer and silkier. I hope everything turns out ok and it is something minor that can be cured quickly.

I've had good luck with horseshoer's secret. Now I am supplementing straight biotin. Have only been using it for about a week so I have no results to speak of. We mainly started biotin to grow manes and tails, but the hoof benefit is a bonus just because we don't shoe our horses.

I use Kauffman's Animal Health Integri Hoof, which was top rated by The Horse Journal a few years ago. It costs less than Farrier's Formula. I've seen a big difference in the foundered horse we have who was constantly blowing abcesses. He abcesses out the coronary band and it takes about 7-8 months to grow out the damaged part of the hoof wall with using the supplement.

does anyone know of any actual scientific studies about biotin, etc and its effect on horses hooves?

or is it just one of those things that everyone knows?

(for the record, I give Millenium Gold which is a megavitamin type pellet suppliment that includes a wack ton of biotin, etc. along with pretty much everything else ever rumored to be important to horses ;). its cheap and easy to give so why not? :) I dont know that its available anywhere else but here in the Pacific NorthWet, though...)

I like the Life Data Labs Farriers Formula.  I've been to the lab an its a first class operation.

Check out the data on supplements at their web page.

I'm also a fan of Farriers Formula! If you are a member of ACTHA, you can use your ACTHA bucks for both Farriers Formula & Vetracyn.

Nother fan of Farriers Formula!I understand though that some horses need extra sulfur, and methionine, which as I understand is a B-complex vitamin, and enables horses to utilize the Omega-3 and Omega-6 better. The biotin is also a nessesary element in the hoof and hair growth.
