Our gelding has developed a strange "growth" at the base of his frog on his right front foot.It is not even the color of the frog tissue,it is lighter in color, and,it will bleed some if handled.I emailed pictures of it to my vet, and, she said that it could possibly be a sarcoid.Has anyone ever seen them develop in this area on a horse? Of course,he is unridable in this condition and I understand that they are H*** to get rid of.

My mare had one on her neck that was a buggar to get healed until I got some Bloodroot. It worked great and the sarcoid never returned. It has been over 12 years since I used the product... I got it from my vet.

And it did bleed a lot. Never heard of one forming near the hoof, but if your vet thinks that is it, then maybe you could try the bloodroot. I'd ask him/her about using it.

Are you going to have a biopsy done? I assume it wasn't present when his feet were last done or at least too small to see. Please keep us posted.

One of my mares had a large Sarcoid on the base of her ear. We bought her this way. The previous owners were "prescribed" bloodroot for it from their "Amish Vet." Apparently this stuff can be extremely painful, and it's use is still evident with Roxy now 3 years later. We have worked through most of her head shyness, but she is still very selective on who lets her touch her head/face especially around the ears.

I would never use bloodroot after seeing the effects it had on her.

We did have our vet take a look at it. He suggested we use an "immune-stimulant" injection series. I don't remember the name of it now (I think it started with a "R"), but essentially, it is injected into the sarcoid and it causes the horses immune system to attack that area from the inside out. He said it would take 2-3 shots at about $100 a piece.

We ultimately ended up going with the "no action" plan, and it eventually has gone away on its own.

The bloodroot never caused her any pain. I applied it with my bare hands. The sarcoid was more painful with the oozing blood and flies attacking all the time. I suspect the mare was "earred" to have the bloodroot applied. My bloodroot came from an actual vet not an Amish wanna be vet. Big difference in how it is compounded.

I figure bloodroot is bloodroot? I thought it was a paste that is bought from a licensed vendor, though, I agree, amish vets are wanna-be's and it could've been mixed by him.

Bloodroot is known to cause inflammation and soreness where it was applied. I would assume one is supposed to stop if it gets to that point and maybe her previous owners didn't stop and kept soring it. Maybe you're right, they grabbed a hold of her ear while they applied it. They didn't strike me as very knowledgable people so who knows. All i know is what was used and the after effects we had to deal with. I'm just glad we got her out of there.

you might want to check out University of Minnesota Equine Center site.
www.cvm.umn.edu/eqserv/news/Feature_sarcoids.html. Vets are having great results with Aldera. I've never heard of sarcoids on or near the frog before, but anything is possible.
Good luck!

Not sure that I know what hoof "canker" is.I emailed the picture to a friend that sent it on to a very knowledgable vet in our state. He said that to him,it appears to be proud flesh that has come up after part of the frog has sloughed off.
He was just shod last week and the farrier brought it to our attention. He said it appears that he may have had some thrush and the frog probably would have had some sloughing to it if that's the case.
we will probably have this biopsied if it doesn't clear with some treatment.

I had not heard of hoof canker,I can't believe it,but,I really had not.I am afraid that you may be right. It doesn't sound like a great prognosis on that condition if it is.Thank you very much for your concern and your reply with the information,I appreciate you! Nice to know someone cares.

That does sound like it could be canker, which is a more rare diagnosis.....we have collaborated as farrier with a vet on a canker case for a client that did take quite a bit of work at the vet clinc.....it was done with a lab workup that pathology defined it as definitely canker.  Here is a link to that case study....hope this is of help....good luck....

Oh Crowleys, I hope your horse doesn't have a canker. That looks painful and expensive. I got the link to work by taking out the extra https. stuff. :)

Good luck with your diagnosis and treatment. One of my guys was diagnosed on Saturday with an ear sarcoid. He gets a product called "xxterra" applied once a day for 14 days. Vet said site will get bloody and ugly before it is healed. I am glad fly season is not yet here!

Thank you Tammy.I got slightly ill looking at it.It doesn't look quiet like that yet, but, the big yellow "blob" of tissue would be in the right place.I only am praying that you are right and it isn't canker. At least I know Dr.Jolly here in AR has treated this,if it turns out to be.

The diagnosis was not hoof canker. We had a biopsy done by Dr.Pallone.It was a chronic infection of the frog which should clear up with the treatment he has prescribed.
