I went to the courthouse this week to pay the property taxes and register my 01 3 horse with an 8ft LQ.  The trailer had and out of state title so I had to have it inspected and the inspector asked to look in the LQ, saw it had bed, sink, stove, bathroom and said he thought we could regsiter the trailer as an RV and then I wouldn't have to stop at the weigh stations.  We went inside and he made some calls, talked to some people and it was finally decided it would be registered with 2 plates, as a trailer and an RV.  I was told this is the way they were to do it.  I live in Nebraksa and in a county with lots of horse trailers so I can't imagine I was the first to ever regsiter an LQ but it seemed like a quite a lot of confusion.  Anyone else have their LQ regsitered as an RV and trailer both?

I've never heard of having both plates. When I was doing some inquiry on registering my trailer, the inspector told me that they would register it as a RV as long as it had cooking, sleeping, water, and lavatories. The fees would be cheaper. This is the way that LQ trailers are registered in Ohio, at least the ones that I know of.

Trailers that are registered as "trailer" are ones that do not have these amenities, like a 3H GN with an unfinished dressing room, stock trailers, small bumper pulls and such. If they are over 3000 lbs, its considered "commercial" and have higher rates.

I, personally, would do my best to only have it registered as a RV. Theres no need to pay for 2 registrations.

GRNM> Do you have  stock side slats on both or one side of your trailer? If you do, you may be able get it tagged as a livestock trailer.

I live in Kansas and my LQ is tagged as an RV. Cheaper tags and property taxes. My 3-Horse 5 foot short wall Gooseneck day trailer cost almost $90.00 more than the LQ in property taxes. Can't figure that one out... only a year difference between the two and the LQ is a lot bigger and of course worth 3 times more. Crazy rules!

Don't think you should have to pay for both tags. Should be one or the other.

Just goes to show if it says "Horse" it'll cost more.

No, none of my trailers have slats--just drop downs or bus style.

There is no such thing as a "livestock trailer" registration in Ohio. Just Under 3k not commercial, over 3k commercial, over 5k title required, and travel trailer/rv. There is a "farm" registration, but it is very limited as to what you can do, like drive across state lines.

The total of the two tags was only $40, I think it was $15 for the RV tag and $25 for the other.

They have it explained to them by a friendly DOT officer, while he is writing them a ticket... Legalese is what is wrong with much of this country...

I have a 2007 4-Star 3 horse slant load with built-out living quarters.  Because my trailer meets the criteria (i.e. Refrigerator, cooking, fully self-contained, sleeping quarters) the Secretary of State clerk issued RV plates.

Yes! We registered our LQ as a mobile home.  And we also had a difficult time.  My husband looked up the NE statutes online to confirm we could register it as an RV.  Then went to the county courthouse, they told him he couldn't register a trailer and an RV.  He offered a copy of the NE statutes, but that didn't help.  We ended up having to email someone at the state level, and had her email the county office and cc us.  We then had to take that email and copy of statute back to the county courthouse.  At the county office the lady kept asking us if we were "sure" it was a horse trailer!!  LOL  My husband finally offered to let her walk outside, see the LQ then smell the poop in the back!!  What a fiasco!!  We came from MT...there you register your trailer 1 time for life, as long as you own it (and it cost less than half of what we pay in NE).  Oh to get back to the simple life!!

You don't have to register it as both...one or the other.  You shouldn't have to pay for 2 registrations.  Best of luck!

Living in NE a life time, I would say, that you need to register it only as an RV! As the previous posts stated, it must have a "kitchen" and toilet.

If you register it as a livestock trailer, you must than meet all CDL rules if you get over 26k or are more than 150 miles from home. Our 4500 with loaded 12' LQ 4 horse will weigh over that but as an RV, it could weigh 80k and be legal. If you get >150 miles from home, and you have farm plates on any truck/trailer, you will need the CDL. This is a fairly new reg but they stated that they are will not enforce--just warn at this time....yea, right!

Please see http://statepatrol.nebraska.gov/docs/TruckInformationGuide.pdf for NE info.

I live in KS and just bought a LQ trailer. I called the treasurer's office to find out how much tags/taxes were going to run. She started asking questions about the LQ, and told me basically that if it is self contained (toiled, air, electricity, running water, AC) that it can be registered as an RV and that usually the property taxes are much cheaper. I talked to the Appraisers office and tagging my trailer as an RV will save us $550 a year in property taxes. We will be tagging it as an RV!!!

We live in Nebr and our trailer has a RV plate. Seems some of the county offices do not understand the regulations.  You should not have to pay for two plates!!  Contact the state office for verification and then get the info to your local office.  You should be able to get a refund for the plate you do not need.
