I never thought I needed these things because I don't dig my feet into the stirrups and I've been riding since Christ walked the earth.   When I was younger I never went off horses, but as I get older I find myself on the ground more.  I've been off young horses three times since July!  Last week a young filly tripped in the snow and we both went down.  I ended up with my right leg under her, we were both laying or our right sides.  When she got up my foot was caught for just long enough to give me a scare.

This has got me thinking about these break away stirrups.  The problem is all my saddles have these nice metal covered stirrups that were pretty expensive to buy, I'd hate to have to replace them all.

Anyone used the break aways?  Any feed back?

A friend once told me she only wears pull on boots so the boot will come off rather than hanging in the stirrup. Just a thought.

Folks are wearing more rubber soled boots now than they use to.  When this happened I had on leather soled boots.

STI stirrups......work, as advertised, and are the best looking of these type of stirrups, agreeable to have on a saddle that you're already proud of... you don't alter your saddle or stirrup leathers in any way, and they work to use for a job of work, too...........very expensive, but still cheaper than a visit to the ER............I've  been horseback since before the stars were born and the moon was little bitty!  Same concerns, tho.  ;)

Good luck with your choices..

I have used a pair of STI Break Away stirrups for the last three years.
Purchased these after a horse wreck where I could have been dragged very easily. I like the STI stirrups and they look just like regular ones.

LOVE the breakaways!! Mine also pivot, which really takes the pressure off of my sore knee.
