I need some input from some of you guys/gals that have some experience dealing with mares????? Me,I have always had geldings and this problem has me really puzzled. Ok hear goes..I have a 10 yr young maiden mare...for the last three years she has been rubbing the hair completely off her butt. So bad last year that her privates were swollen. I have treated her for everything from pin worms to dry skin. Now here it is Feb dead of winter and what I thought the last two years was sap off trees from the rubbing, can't be cause there is no sap????? ugh ugh I guess you guys know what it is yep the neighbors gelding has her horseing and I think she is rubbing her juices (uck) off on her stall and its also taking the hair with it. Now have any of you guys ever seen this before? My husband has been around horses his whole life and he says he's never seen it before. Hope I don't sound completely wacko!!!

I plan on letting the vet take a look at her when she comes in the spring to pull blood for their annual coggins. But since it's not life threatning???

It all depends on how bad it is. Why let it get worse when is might be dealt with sooner? Might not be life threatening but it can get expensive to treat if allowed to prolong. I don't know, I am not there and cannot see what is going on...you are. If there is a randy gelding in the neighborhood I certainly be making sure he isn't allowed any access. The part about her vulva ( I assume that is what you meant by "privates") being swollen, that would concern me.There is a good chance of infection within the reproductive tract to the mare which could make her unable to carry a foal in the future. IMO-I'd have a vet out to take a look.

Geez louise here we go again.....everytime I post on this forum it goes way left of the original question. Farmbabe I have no intention of letting my horse get any worse if it gets to that I WOULD call the vet. When she starts this I am at the barn cleaning her ##s every afternoon when she is put in her stall for the night. After a few months the hair grows back but in the meantime looks like crap. And sorry to say I'm a little vain when it comes to how my horse looks...I did not post a question asking how to take care of my horse I asked has anyone ever dealt with this problem or heard of it. Please!!!!

Some riding friends of ours had the same problem with their gelding.  They applied diaper rash cream to the area which helped to relieve the itching.  There was never anything definitive discovered but he quit doing it after about two years.  There quite possible could have been something in the pasture he was alergic to that has since died out and that is why he no longers scratches.

I might try the diaper rash cream thanks....... I thought it might be something in the pasture the first time but dang this is Feb and there is nothing in the pasture and the trees are bare. Not even a cedar or pine tree in the section she is in. Actually its kind of early for her to start this thats why I thought it might have something to do with the neighbors horse getting her all excited. Last year I washed her butt and the underside of her tail with sulfedine shampoo probly do that again as soon as the weather gets above freezing brrr.

No offense was intended. You asked a question and I tried to be helpful. Since your husband has had a long history with horses and has not seen anything like this I would think it might be prudent to have a vet see it rather than post a question on a forum. Sometimes you have to take suggestions or not. But don't get all worked up.

First time my mare started this-- last fall- she had been dewormed recently-- so I cleaned her udders-- and she stopped-

Now she's doing it again -- It's too cold to "clean" her- so I've been using some calm coat on that area till it warms up a bit-- I just usually clean her with KY Jelly

Thanks ClaudiaIn sounds more and more like it might be a case of her just needing to be cleaned.... I always clean between her udder when I groom her but never really thought about back there??? It's supposed to be 62 degrees saturday (I hope I hope)so I'll probably try and get to it. Right now we have a 90percent chance of snow can you believe it. Thanks everybody for your input....

Rubbing like you describe is usually due to some irritation in the perineal area. I asked my vet and his response is, that he has has seen it in mares with vaginitis, a foreign object in the vagina, urinary tract problems, dermatological (skin) conditions, and cystitis (inflammation of the urinary bladder). Have your veterinarian check out everything behind that might be provoking the rubbing.

Does she only do this while she is in season, or is it all of the time?

She started it 2 years ago, her butt was always sticky so I just assumed it was sap from her rubbing on trees in the pasture. I'd wash her where the hair was missing really good and keep vasaline on her till the hair grew back. This is the first time I've connected it with her being in season cause of course theres no sap and it was usually later in the year. And my husband caught her horseing around with the neighbors gelding at the fence.

That being the case, it sounds like one of three things.

One, she could have an infection that is causing drainage, during her heat cyle, that is irritating to the skin.

OR

Two, some mares just itch while they are in season. If this is the case, you'll need to clean her daily and apply an ointment to sooth the irritated areas.

OR

Three, get a gelding, LOL

If this has been going on 2 years, then most likely it is a reproductive tract issue and has now become more serious due to the time factor and not being treated. Infections can throw off a mare's normal cycling pattern and make her have an aggressive heat cycle. It could be a chronic infection or a tumor or cysts, all of which is probably treatable. Not pointing fingers, but I would of seen a vet, or mentioned it during a routine visit, before 2 years. If her anus sinks causing what is called a tipped vulva, which can be conformation, weight, or age related, then she can be constantly contaminating herself and causing infection. She can be flushed and treated for infection and a caslick's performed to keep contamination out and that will end the issue.
