Stable Mat floors are generally made up of a number of individual ramp mats. Urine can drain through the cracks when the mats are joined together. Unless one periodically cleans under the mats, or there is good drainage under the mats, the urine can build up under the Stable mats. The urine then breaks down, releasing ammonia (an unhealthy and unpleasant smelling gas) and odours. 40

is there a "brand" or common name for that,Paul? Yeah,that was kind of a flat statement about the ammonia odor that I pretty much think is common knowledge among horse owners who stable.

Although the horses are not stabled 24/7 on a regular basis( generally only in the spring summer)...I have had mats in the stalls for year....YEARS..never moved them and cleaned them yet I have no ammonia odors unless the bedding has not been changed ( and I do clean them everyday they are stalled) Other than the sand we put down to level the dirt floors, there is no real drainage to speak of. I had MORE problems with ammonia odors prior to the mats which is one of the reasons for them..that and the stalls are much easier to clean.

We have vulcanized rubber vet mats that are "glued" together at the seams. We have NO odor whatsoever, unless, stalls are dirty. But, we still sprinkle PDZ on any wet spot on top of the mat as a precaution. Even though, our stalls are stripped and sanitized on a regular basis. Ammonia can reak havoc on their lungs.
