When I'm training young horses still in the snaffle I always use a mecarte (sp).

Things I like about the mecarte--

*I like the roper riegn set up

*I like that I can easily adjust the length of the riegn

*I love that I can take the long end and and loop it through my belt so when I get thrown I still have my horse.

*I like the feel of the horse hair rope

*I like the pricklyness it puts on the horses neck which helps teach him to move off the riegn.

Heres my question...  is there any set up on can use to use a mecarte with a curb bit?  On the snaffle you use slobber straps to hook the mecarte to the bit...  on a curb that would not really work.  I'm just kinda thinking out loud here but there are some things about mecartes I would like to use on my curb bits.

I would not attach anything other than the reins and a curb strap to a curb bit. If you wanted something similar, you could leave a halter on underneath the bridle and attach your rope to the under the chin ring of the halter.

I found some "get down ropes" at Craig Camerons sight, I will order some of those and try.

I've used mecate reins with a tom thumb bit. What I did with the slobber straps is make my own from my extra scrap leather and make them small enough to fit thru the rings. Works quite well.

The cowboys in my neck of the woods all use pencil bosals under their bridles. Then they use a get-down rope tied abround the horse's neck with a bolen knot and run through the pencil bosal. The loose end of the
get-down rope goes back to the saddle horn.

I'll try that, that might do the trick.
