It was 70 degrees here yesterday about noon. By four o'clock the temp had dropped to about 34, the wind had risen to sixty mph, and it was snowing to beat hell. Today, my horses are busting through belly-deep snowdrifts and the wind is still at 40 plus with the temp at 22. I think places in Kansas are supposed to be even worse, with drifts up to fifteen feet. My animals have feed and shelter, but the mules across the fence, which I have been feeding all winter, have no feed and no shelter. I have no way to get feed to them, and I am sure that their owner hasn't even thought of them. Poor animals!
It is supposed to stop snowing here later on tonight and be sunny for tomorrow. Next week will be a muddy mess, but at least warmer temps are on the way.

Marla, in regards to the Mules. Don't you have Animal Control or can you call local Law Enforcement?

If the mules on the other side of the fence are bad and the owner hasn't or won't ask for help, then take pictures and call your local news station. If I were in a finacial situation.......I would reach out for help before the situation became dire. After trying, if the situation becomes dire, I at least tried.

Yep, the weather is crappy here in Kansas. Western Kansas has gotten over 28 inches of snow! Here in the KC area we are getting strong gusty winds and the biggest, wettest snow flakes I have ever seen. We are by no means going to get as much snow as western Kansas, but it has been a strange day to say the least. Start out as a heavy down pour for several hours, to sleet to snow and wind. And more snow storms are on the way next week.

We didn't have 5 inches of snow all winter and now we are making up for lost snow when it is suppose to be spring. Trails won't be rideable for weeks.

I have been trying for months to have something done for these animals. The probldem is that Quay County does not have a facility to accomodate confiscated animals and the local judge will not conficate the abused animals with no place to put them and no money allocated for feed and vet care. The county commissioners have tabled my proposal to create a facility, saying that in these economic times they have more important issues to deal with. The livestock inspector, who is a disgusted as I am, has no authorityto confiscate the animals without a court order, which the judge will not issue. Since I have been feeding the animals they look pretty good, so nobody feels particularly sorry for these animals. It is a catch 22.

Sad about the mules....

I woke up to to a blanket of snow this morning. I can't complain, the people out west are the ones suffering right now.

Maybe if the news gets hold of it the judge will be forced to take action.
