I've already perused similar posts on the forum, but haven't found information that will help me with my decision.

I need to replace the Cooper Discoverer H/T tires on my trailer due to age (purchased 10/2013). Size LT235/85/R-16/E1.  I've called a couple of places to see if they have same/similar tires in stock and tell them I want nothing made in China.  The first thing I get is that I need to be running ST tires on my trailer, that LT tires are not good.  I called a local trailer dealer and they told me the same thing -  I need to be running ST tires.  I finally called Exiss and was told the following:
"
The tires recommended for that trailer is LT235/85R15 E. Our current application is ST235/80R16 E, however either will do the job."

What is the difference between 85R15 and 85R16?  Why the push/change to ST tires from tire stores, dealers, and even the manufacturer (Exiss)?  Do they make an ST tire now that can go over 65 mph?  How can I determine what tires are actually made in the USA as I can no longer assume an American company/product is still that?

Well, I think there may be a typo in your post further confusing things. The last number in a tire size is the wheel diameter in inches. So your 15 and 16 will be two different creatures. But the more common question is this one- am I better off with a ST or LT tire? From an old tire and trailer person, my opinion. History says that for years we ran LT232/85R16 "E" (would have been called a 10 ply rating) that was rated at 3,042#. Folks would tell you they were easy to find, ran well, generelly didn't give any problems, and we loved them. A few years ago, the tire mfg started pushing the ST tires talking about all their advantages. They come in two sizes a ST235/85R16 and a ST235/80R16. The 80 series will be a little bity shorter in height. In the Load range E, both of these are technically rated for more weight than the LT. But in reality, it seems like the rating scale may be different, as the higher rated tires don't seem to perform any better than the old fashioned LT. But- new trucks don't use the LT235/85R16 anymore so there aren't as many choices, and they aren't bargain priced anymore either.

Exiss is going to recommend you stay with the LT, because that's what the VIN plate dictates. But their statement is accurate, and there is a third (and very good option) in the ST235/85R16. Keeps the same basic profile, in a fairly easy to find size. The Goodyear Endurance is American made in that size, and has plenty of weight rating.

Thanks for your reply. I didn't realize the 15/16 size difference until you pointed it out.  I did reach back out to the Exiss rep asking why the transition from LT to ST tires.  He tried finding an answer, but said all the engineers who worked at Exiss the time the decision was made were no longer employed there.

Don't overthink this. Basically, when your trailer was built, ST tires weren't very common. Now they are. Either will serve you well. I can promise you, the trailer Co. purchasing agent was just buying what the tire supplier recommended, which is what they had on hand and was priced as reasonable as possible and rated for the estimated weight.

You're right.  I shouldn't over think this.  I'm good with the tires I've chosen.  Now I'm looking at my wheels.  Peeling, surface rust.  Yuck.  Thinking of getting new ones.  Anything I need to know about this venture before I buy new wheels?

Just make sure the new wheels are rated for the air pressure you plan to run and the weight you'll have. At one time for steel wheels, there was a common one rated for 80PSI, and another for 110. I think most aluminums are for the higher. Just be sure and check.

I actually will not run ST tires, they are all made in China, and as far as that cooper tire it has been replaced by the same model but with a 2 after it, they are readily available at most americas tires, which is the only place I buy tires, well anything smaller the a 19.5 anyway.
