My 2 horse slant load weighs 4,000 lbs with a tongue weight of just under 800 lbs. If I load my single horse in the first stall he is way ahead of the axles with his front end. If I load him in the rear stall he is exactly over the axles. The axles are placed in the rear most position on the trailer (47" from between the two axles to the rear of the trailer). The trailer is 16 ft long, with a 14ft wall length and 2ft nose.

My question: I would prefer to put my horse in the rear stall because he has more room there. And I have a class IV hitch with a max allowable hitch weight of 1,100 lbs. I don't want to increase the tongue weight to much over 900 lbs. Since I always only travel with one horse it would make sense to keep him in the rear stall.

However, everyone I asked around here tells me a single horse in a 2 horse slant needs to go in the front stall. Why?

In that example, the load is way behind the axles. In my example, the load is over the axles.

If you want to try it, I'd suggest you invest in this, and get your own numbers. If you can load to where you want, and keep 15% tongue weight, you should be fine. Your lengths are very long for a 2H slant, so you may have an unusual axle placement.

Too much tongue weight (within reason) just causes a lot of squat, but no one gets hurt. Too little tongue weight causes wrecks.

Joybell ... The principle is the same ... But, it's your horse and trailer, do as you wish.

I sincerely hope you don't injure someone else on the road.
