One of our horses is having issues this spring. We were brushing them out yesterday and his coat/skin seems to be very dry to the point that his hair is is very thin(One can see his skin). There seems to be a lot of dander. No signs of parasites. Are there any supplements we could be adding to his grain to help?docgj

I use MTG and Nustock on this kind of problem. Maybe you should contact your vet to see if an iodine shampoo would help.

I think I'd have a vet take a look. Years ago I had a horse losing hair in patches. Turned out to be lice! They were invisible to the naked eye. The vet gave me something to bathe him with. His barn mate never got them even though they were constant companions.

For skin and hair problems I've used and liked Eqyss products, medicated shampoos and sprays. Also last year used Vetericyn (not sure of spelling) which was available from both my vet and the local Orschlein's. Vetercyn was easy because I could just spray it on - no shampooing.

Any of the businesses like Valley Vet (online and by catalog) offer a wide variety of supplements which they describe as for hair and hoof problems as well as other.

Good luck.

Look to flax, or supplements with lots of Omega 3's, and even some oils like flax, or soy if he horse will tolerate soy. ( It can be an allergy bringer)
Stay away from Corn oil, as it has some Omega 3's, but is also even higher in Omega 6's, which can cause inflammation of joints.
start with about 1/3rd cup a day, and work up to about 1/2 cup. if you need to flavor it, just put some alfalfa pellets with it.
He apparently needs some oils put back in his skin, and you do best by adding from the inside out.

I almost always have a foster horse, and they tend to come with scratches, rain rot, or lice.  Supplementing vitamin A seems to address the underlying condition that causes the immune system to not be able to handle those issues.  I give 5 cc (cattle injectable) topped dressed on their feed, once a week, and every single horse has cleared up after two doses.

You wouldn't want to keep doing this forever, as vitamin A toxicity is an issue, but 2-3 doses seems to be safe.

One of my horses has horrendous skin issues. He's dry, itchy, then gets infections in open wounds from flies. I finally tried Healthy4Horses' Omega Aid and all of his issues disappeared! His coat is beautiful, his mane doesn't have bald spots, and his tail is finally long enough that I have to trim it. The Omega Aid is expensive($99/gal) but that lasts over 6 months. Good luck.

I agree with the Omegas...I feed either soybean oil or whole flaxseed. Deworm your horse, shampoo with a nice gentle product, dry some lice power( we use it on calves with hair loss) and/or have your vet take a look. Also consider keeping him in during the day as the sun can really dry out the coat.
