My husband has just taken up riding and has started trail riding. He has a pair of riding breeches (they were given to me in a big bag of stuff) that are quite comfy for him, but I am hoping to get him something a little tougher (and with a tougher image, lol!) for going out on the trail. I, myself, won't ride in anything but breeches after having some serious rubs from the seams in good, old Levi's; but I'm a girl, so I can get away with it! Seems I remember Wranglers were supposed to have a smaller seam? I am wondering what other guys have found comfy. Hopefully someone can point us in a great direction and prevent wastage of money in my pursuit of the best men's riding pants. He rides in an Australian stock saddle. Thanks!

I understand about men's riding breeches, wouldn't be very cool to some.  My husband who is a rough and tough guy always swore by his Wranglers, but would complain that they really wasn't very comfortable or cool.    But this summer he has been wearing Dickies brand  work pants that are dark green, tan and dark brown.  They look like the Carhart pants of duck material.   He swears by them for comfort and cool in the summer.

Since you're in Florida this may not be of much help.  I'm in central WI where the hight today was 16.  Earlier this winter I bought a pair of fleece lined Wrangler jeans to try out.  They are the greatest pants I've ever ridden in - winter or summer.  I don't even bother with thermax under them on cold days like today.  I find I sit better and move less in the saddle with them on.   Buy your normal pant size and you should be good to go.

When I did a couple of endurance rides, Folks would try hard to get me to use breeches and other fancy riding pants.  Offering to loan me al kinds of stuff.

I personally don't find denim jeans uncomforatable.  Only once or twice in all my years have I had any problems. Once was on a 50 mile endurance ride, My pants got wet and the wet pants rubbed a sore on the inside of both calves. I could have prevented this by wearing some half chaps or staying dry.

If there is a chance I'll get wet, I put on shotgun chaps.  If the risk isn't to great or the temps are warmer, I use Chinks. And the half chaps work great if I just need some protection below the knee.  We ride a lot of miles in all kinds of weather and just wear jeans.

I suggest he just go for a few rides.  If he starts getting rubs, then look for a solution to those problem areas.  Yes there are lots of guys who do wear breeches and seem to enjoy them. But I can show you a lot of pictures of cowboys working cows off horses in Jeans.  And I'll bet you won't see any breeches at any rodeo you attend.  Of course cowboys roping calves at a rodeo, don't sit on that horse for 25 miles in an afternoon either.

We put a lot of long miles on horses wearing jeans and some sort of chap/chinks.  Works for us.

If you look close, everyone of these guys is wearing jeans.

Ohhh, but it gets HOT here Painted Horse! I used to ride in jeans myself, but I'll never go back! The other issue he has is that the jeans ride up just a little, leaving part of his calf exposed, which then rubs along the flap a little. He's been riding in some Blundstone-type slip on boots he acquired while we were in New Zealand. When he rides in the breeches, this doesn't happen... Some cowboy boots may solve this problem, but I can also foresee the top of the boot hitting right where the flap ends and being very annoying as you ride and your leg swings a little and the top of the boot catches on the flap just a little... Maybe I'll measure that distance to see where a cowboy boot top would hit.

I'll bite since I have a husband that rides lots of miles as well. I second the Dickies pants. My husband started wearing them in brown or khaki and they are a lighter material and work great. He also started wearing leather half chaps and that is the key to no rubbing, twisting or riding up. The chinks or chaps obviously work the same way. He does sometimes wear jeans around the house but again always with his half chaps. You will probably have to buy the half chaps a size too big as they are designed to fit over breeches which arent as bulky as jeans or pants. Thats what we did. In cold weather you can wear flannel lined jeans or thermals under the Dickies. It gets hot here in Texas too, and humid, but we have found the half chaps (I wear breeches and half chaps) are worth being a tad warmer as they really do prevent soreness on the legs. When pleasure riding I also often wear jeans with my half chaps.

I think you can see from the photos I've posted that we are not in very hot weather here.

if you look at the men's  breeches on www.vtosaddlery.com  or www.doversaddlery.com there are a couple that are quite "manly"   my s.o. swears by riding pants now....and he will tell anyone that comfort is the only consideration......

I live in Fl also. My hubby wears jeans with half chaps with no apparent issues...Check out Ariat's Terrain Half Chaps. I wear these and they are much cooler than regular leather and wear extremely well. They are made of a mix of leather and a mesh material.

Sometimes, you can find riding pants made of denim. My hubby had some of these but they wore out and he just went to regular jeans. Some wear panty hose under the jeans but that won't solve a riding up problem and I would consider it a bit of warm solution. I say, let him be comfortable and wear whatever works for him. You could possibly get some elastic straps that were meant to hold jodphurs from riding up. They clip to the bottom of the pants and go under the boot. That might also do the trick for him. http://www.legacytack.com/p/10477/Jodphur%20Clips.html

Pantyhose....They're cheap and nobody will know you're wearing them under your pants. I ended up using them for a long distance ride and they worked. A man told me about this........

I just got 3 pair of CINCH jeans the lady at the western store said they were great for riding and they have been so far I have always worn levis but I like the cinch jeans better. the seems dont bother the inside of your thigh and they are roomy in the thigh and but area. They are several labels to choose from I tried on all of them and liked the white label the best.

Someone else just told me about the Cinch white label jeans, too! Found some on sale somewhere for $40. Those or the Dickies with some jodphur straps and maybe half-chaps ought to do the trick, I'm thinking.....

Buy the Cinch or the Wrangler cowboy cut.  They have flat seams on the inside. Buy them long enough so that they don't ride up on the lower leg when you are in the saddle.  This will make them too long for walking around comfortably, but that's why they make spurs.  Nice long rowels will keep the bottom of your pants legs from dragging on the ground when you walk.

pantyhose under jeans brings back a wonderful memory.

I used to help wrangle on some riding holidays in Wy and they would tell the men to bring pantyhose to wear under their jeans. Two of the guys had their luggage lost, so we had to stop at Wal-Mart so they could replace some essential items - some of which were pantyhose  We got a kick out of figuring out what size these guys needed (Queen) and they said they came in quite handy during the week. They were all 6' and nicely built.

The last day of the ride, 3 of them modeled their pantyhose for the women and the only other thing they were wearing was underwear, boots, and cowboy hats!!  That image will be stuck in my mind forever (and they were mighty fine looking men!  sigh....

SO=Significant Other.

Knew a guy years ago who always wore pantyhose when he went hunting. Swore they worked better than long johns-just as warm and not as bulky.

I'll tell a secret about when I was a scuba diving instructor.
With all the wet suits, and sand/salt we used to get really rashed up. So to keep both warmer, and to cut down on any irritation from the salt and sand we ALWAYS wore panty hose. When you are wet and salty/sandy most of the time while training and swimming 2-4 miles a day, you need all the help you can get!!

Cowbut cut Wranglers, long enough that they stack quite a bit just standing in your boots, also, excessive rubbing can be a sign that your legs are not quiet enough, just a thought...

we have ridden long distances day after day, moving cattle from winter range to summer pasture......no rubs ...

We have found that cotton (jeans) is cooler than synthetics....even with chinks for the brush..

I have always worn some type of denim jeans.  I like Wrangler better than most.  I will agree chaps make a big difference in the cold and rain,  But tend to find myself just in jeans in the summer.

I have alwas wanted to try the fleece lined jeans.  Good to hear they are comfortable.  I also like the long johns under jeans in the winter with chaps.

Painted horse - there are some quality eats going on in those photos LOL
