i have a bumper pull, which is hooked up to my truck 90% of the time. i put some white grease on the ball, and wd40 on the mechanism that opens and closes the trailer hitch over the ball.... it lives in a pretty dusty area, so it looks dirty, but i guess still lubricated. is this the right thing to do? should i clean it and re-grease the ball whenever i re-hitch? thanks.

We don't regrease, unless it looks like it is getting thin and needing more.

The dirt and grease make a pretty good abrasive compound.  It'll wear off the chrome but unlikely to wear anything close to structural failure.  Wiping off the dirty grease when you unhitch does save your best riding breeches from a nasty stain.  A ball cover does the same thing.
