Location: Portland, OR | Hello all, Looking at a new trailer, dual axle 3H GN that comes standard with #5200 rated axles. The trailer weighs 4800 and is GWVR 10,500. Do you think the axles should be upgraded (to #7000) or would the standard (#5200) be enough. If upgraded, the tires and wheels would also need to be upgraded ($$$). Thanks! |

Location: DUNCAN, OKLA | The only difference between the two axles if I recall is the outside bearing on the 7K is a little larger. Both axles have 12x2 brakes. The 7K has a larger Magnet. Through the years I've experienced less problems with the 5200 lb axle. The 5200 axle should be sufficient and will give you a softer ride. The 5200 can have the 6 hole or 8 hole hubs, while the 7000K only has 8 Hole hubs. I believe both axles have the same spindle. I don't believe in your case the cost of the upgrade will justify the need. |

The heftier axles in and of themselves might not be a bad idea, but there is little/no sense in adding stiffer springing and getting a harsher ride.
There should be adequate margin in the standard axles, heavier ones COULD lead you to a temptation to errrr, exceed a GVxxx number somewhere - see other topics (-:

Location: North Carolina | The question I have is : Why do you think they should be upgraded? Another point is, if the axles are the torsion type, you will be increasing the spring rate when the heavier axles are installed. This will make for a rough ride, and a really rough (possibly trailer damaging) ride when empty |
