The Hocking Hills are in my backyard; well almost. It is beautiful. Not a lot trails for airing it out on a gaited horse. July is hot and humid probably. From the Palmerosa you have to ride an asphalt road to get to the trails. Not a lot of traffic, but the locals don't slow down much for horses. Steve will take you to various drop-off points so that you can ride back to camp and see more of the forest. Three Reasons has a great location, but every year I hear a different story: it's open, it's closed, it's open only for groups, it's open only for day riding. Call them and be persistent, Lynn seems to be too busy to return phone calls. The state camp also has a good location, but as noted it is primitive. There are several other forests nearby with camping, you might want to consider 3 days at Hocking and 3 days somewhere else - Tar Hollow, Pike State Forest, Shawnee State Forest or Salt Fork State Park. Pike and Shawnee have private campgrounds. |
