I'm shopping for some clippers that will be used for everything from full body clips to trims on my daughter's Welsh/QH mix pony. She gets pretty wooly in the winter (the pony, not my daughter LOL). I've searched and found that people like the Wahl Stable Pro, Double Ks, Oster Clipmasters and Golden A5s.

I plan to teach my daughter to clip, once I learn myself, so I'd like some that a small teen girl can handle. I'd also like to stay below $200 or so, which probably rules out the Clipmasters and Double Ks unless somebody knows where I can get a great deal on them.

Any and all suggestions welcome!

Oster Golden A5's with 2 speeds are the only clippers I have.  One set, still alive and kicking has lasted me 15 years or more.  I got a second set about 5 years ago and I just love how easy it is to find blades!

I've clipped everything that grows hair with mine and yet nothing seems to slow them down.  If you take care of your things then this is the way to go!

Thanks for the quick reply, Huntseat. Yes, your earlier post is the reason why I'm considering the Oster Goldens. I've also seen the Turbo A5s for just a little more ($15 or so). Have you ever looked at those?

As you noted, the Wahl Stable Pro has been a good one for us.........heck I even use it on my hair sometimes.

I'm sorry my second one has the turbo...the fast speed on my original and the slow on my (new) turbo are about the same speeds, both of which will cut anything.

If you are going to body clip (regularly), I'd recommend checking out used cattle shears, they are easily found at any stock show just go when the livestock is there and find the clipper trailer, they'll sharpen, repair, etc. and they also deal in used clipmasters for cheap!  If I find some links I'll share...

Here is a link to Sullivans Show Supply they have NEW clipmasters for $225-$230.

I have a set of Clipmasters that I paid 250.00 for.  I shave the draft horses (their leg hair is super thick) and the dogs.  They have lasted for 6 years so far and are still going.  Plus, they have a 3" blade that zooms the hair off!

I have both the Wahl Stable Pro, and  Oster A5.  The Oster has 2 speeds which is nice and the blade assembly is easy to change.  Not so easy to change blades on the Wahl.  I send them BOTH to the manufacturer DIRECTLY every couple of years for cleaning and "tune ups".  Both have served me well for years.  I guess the Wahls are at least 18 years old.  I also use them on the dogs too !

Thanks everyone for all the recommendations. I really like the Double K design with the motor separate from the clippers, but I'll have to save my pennies up a while longer. I'll probably go with either the Wahl Stable Pro or the Oster Turbo A5. Now I just have to find somebody who'll let me practice on their horse. LOL.

I wouldn't want a thick cord like that (double K) tangled up under some horses I've had the "pleasure" of dealing with.  If they pull on an electrical cord, game over they unplug it and I can let go.  I wouldn't want anything that would pull me into the "explosion."  I taught kids almost exclusively and when it comes to kids and horses safety is always your first priority!

I bodyclip 2 to 5 head of horses and mules every year with the Double K's and can't praise them enough. My set is almost 10 years old. I love the fact that I don't have to bathe them in the dead of winter before clipping. Shoot, I can have one completely body clipped before I can have one washed and dried to get ready to clip.  Although, if the weather is nice enough, I will bathe to save on premature blade wear. The cords have never been and issue for me. I like having the motor out away from the animal and I also like the fact that I am not having to hold up the weight of the motor. I tried body clipping with the big cordless Osters, but they track badly as the battery is running down, they cut differently.

I have old Sunbeams that I lend out. I don't use them hardly at all since they are soooooooo heavy.  I got them back in the late 60's and they are still going strong.

I usually do my broodmares quick bridlepath clips out in the pasture with the Wahl Arco clipper. I hate the blades though. I like being able to use clippers with choice of # blades instead of one size does all with the help of the plastic clippy things.

I just want to thank everyone again for all the good advice on horse clippers, and also for the generous "will clip for food" offers, LOL. My daughter and I trimmed her pony yesterday and everything went great. I showed her how the Turbo A5s worked by hacking a small patch of hair off one shoulder, and she then proceeded to do the rest of the clipping like she'd been doing it all her life. The clippers were very easy for her to hold and control, and she really enjoyed the job. She wouldn't even let me have a turn! She must have some natural eye for it or something, because she didn't leave hardly any tracks and the clip looks great. She even did the head and around the eyes without upsetting the pony. I made up some blade wash with diesel and baby oil and it kept the blades running smooth as silk. Long story short, we're very pleased with these clippers.

I do like the Osters tubo A-5 but recently got a double K and its just the greatest thing ever made. easy easy easy to use- I tend to scratch my head when someone describes some horrible problem but it just doesn't exsist! As long as you like the A-5 then good for you! Personally, I will only use mine when I am at a show and need a quick touch up.

I eventually would like to have the Double Ks, as I like the concept of the stronger motor being separated from the clipper head. Just couldn't swing the $300+ for them right now. I got the Turbo A5s from Goodman's for $125, which included a #10 blade.
