Location: missouri | I am curious about how many of you on this board ride "usin horses" quarter,appaloosa/paint/other? and who rides gaited horses? My husband and I have quarter horses (love em) and one big gorgeous Missouri Foxtrotter mare. I enjoy and easy ride down the trail on the quarters... but it can be fun, and smooth on the trotter (unless I am on my non gaited mare behind her...that bone jarring fast trot is no fun when his is in a running walk at 12+ MPH. |

Rode walkers....forever. My oldest TWH was 39 at the time of his death.
Got an Icelandic Horse in March 2004. That's what I ride now, will never go back to stock horse. Love the racking gait...too much to give it up.
Having an Icelandic is the best of both worlds. They trot and they gait!

Location: pensacola, fl | I have: 2 Paint Horses ( QH Bloodlines) 1- medicine hat gelding (5 yrs) that will beat you to death with his trot 1- Tobiano mare (26 yrs)that is smooth and fun to turn her loose and run. 1- Paint (Throughbred Bloodlines)(8 yrs) VERY smooth ride. 1- OLD Appalossa (40+) haven't ridden him in years 2- Large Pony type Horses (in their teens)( I only ride them when they need an attitude adjustment.) |

She is my old reliable when a novice rider wants to go trail riding. Can't beat a reining horse's "WHOA". 3 Missouri Foxtrotters - Two just turned 5 years-old and the other is 10 years-old. Switched to the MFT horses because I needed a smooth gait with a quiet temperment for trails. Love my MFTs. Very versatile and super easy to train. |

Location: Alvordton Ohio | Hi, Everyone thought I would let you know what I have and ride. I have Paso Fino's And let me tell you they all ride a little different . I had one paso that rode like being in a rocking chair. Sorry to say that I had too put him down in 2003  . I took him with me everywhere. And I beleive it has a lot too do with the bloodlines. The day after Thanksgiving I just bought a Paint with quarterhorse back ground. He just turned 2 in Janurary He looks smooth,just is so tall compared too what I'm used too. But I like all horses. But I can say that Quarter horse riders do not really like riding with the paso's because we can ride all day in a corto gait. and they get bounced around alot on their trot. But I have also rode a Rocky Mountain too. And they are smooth too. But it is to each their own. |

Location: Southern New Mexico | I have 2 QH's and 4 Appys. One appy and one QH will jar your teeth out. The other Qh is pretty smooth and one of the other appys is fairly smooth. The other two are under 2. The smoothest I've ever had was and unregistered paint. He could jog all day and not break a sweat, you could ride and do your homework on him and it would be readable. I miss that horse. |

Location: Hill Country, Texas | Only QH's for us. Hubby ropes and now I have him team penning and sorting which he actually likes and will give up a roping for that to go with me. I like moseying down the trail on a QH. No need to be in a hurry....to me that is what trail riding is about. I keep threatening that I want to get a mule since my last back surgery but he said he'd divorce me if I did!  I tried a Rocky Mountain when we went to the Bar 50 in Arkansas and the "gait" killed my back. This was the owners personal horse and was supposed to be the best. Other than that, I really liked him tho but man I couldn't walk when i got off! |

Not all gaited horses will be smooth.A lot depends on their natural inclination to gait,and on how they have been ridden.You can ride the gait right out of a horse that is marginally gaited to begin with.Too many people want to push them for speed,and not all gaited breeds adapt to a fast gait. |

Location: Hill Country, Texas | I didn't push this horse, in fact, mostly stayed in a walk which is how I like to trail ride....the moseying along thing lol... I did let him do his gait thing tho for just a little bit...I wanted to see what it was all about. Guess I'm just a QH gal. The owner said that because he was shorter coupled than my mare that maybe I got too much of his back leg action. It doesn't take much to get my back in a tiz!  I still want to try a mule! |

Location: Northern Utah | I started with Paints (Hence my name) but I converted about 8 years ago. My paints just didn't hold up to long trail rides. Too many hoof problems.
One National Show Horse and four Foxtrotters. Cows are long gone around my place, So a horse is a way to get from Point A to Point B. And there is no sense of moseying when you need to get someplace. I ride them into remote lakes to fish in the summer and chasing deer and elk in the fall.

| I have two gaited horses and one who should be gaited but isn't. funny thing is when I ride the non-gaited horse, what ever she is doing does not make me the least bit sore. I have ridden her on the trail up and down hills for over 7 hours and felt like we were just starting. ( I am 56 yrs young). She is 6 yrs old, part arabian and part saddle bred. She is very smart,not very excitable and takes new experiences in stride. All three of my horses are delights to ride.(Yeah, I am one of those back yard breeders that some of the respondants on this web site writes some not so nice comments about.) |

Well.... Living in the high desert as we do, we all ride Arabians or arab crosses. Our club has several members who ride in some of the western events, do gymkhana, and even cutting and heeling. Myself, I just mostly like to trail and explore, but do want to get where I am going with little fuss. Sooooo... I stick with my lil polish Arabian mare, and my wife on her Arab/Qtr cross. |

Location: Naples, Florida | I have an inner ear problem and always ended on the ground when I lost my seat at the trot. Friend said try a TWH...have been riding them since and no more off balance. You do have to have one that truely walks....I am 65 this year and love long distance riding with kids and grandkids. This weekend is a poker run of 16 - 20 miles. I plan on beating all the trotting horses..ha ha |

Location: Melder, La. | I love my Paso Fino's. I guide for a horsecamp, and so I have to lead QH's sometimes, and gaited other times. My Paso's will slow walk, or gait with the best of them. They are so smooth. One ride I was leading we had some green riders, some on TWH's and some on QH's, I got tickled because one girl asked me
"Why does your horse walk so much prettier than the others?" I had to laugh and tell her Paso's have a Fine Step! |

Location: Illinois | Born and raised with QH, but bought an appy when I was 18. Up until 2 years ago, that's all I had. Then times changed, horses died, and I was back with my good ol QH. We have 2 QH, 1 Arab/QH, 1 Paint, 2 mini Donkeys. However, I would LOVE to try a fox trotter, and think Mules are AWESOME! A good horse is a good horse, regardless. I do love my paint mare though She's not the most smooth ride, but she's trustworthy and gentle!!! Now, if mother nature would let up, I'd like to get back on the trail!!!!! Spring's a coming!! ra

Location: Edmond, OK | Gaited for me...TWH's. One gelding who turns 3, and my "anyone can ride her" mare who turns 10 this spring. My son, brother, friends, ride her when I take both. And the people I ride with, mostly women, ride gaited. It's easier for the group to stay at the same speed, whether walking or gaiting. It's hard for QH people to keep up, unless they want to trot all day. Not that I am making a biased statement - just fact. Some ride walkers, some ride fox trotters. |

I use to ride alot but since I have got the mules and wagons that's about all we do now. I do have one red john mule that is a real smooth ride for sale, he will also drive. | I have 3 QH's. I have ridden Mft's and personally don't like the darn head bobbin stuff they do, makes me nervous. I will say they are comfortable but I also don't care to travel so darn fast. (or maybe it's not them but the rider that can't slow them down!) At any rate, I do own one smooth QH that I can sit a trot on him for hours and it does not jar me to death like some can! |

| Not all MFT's have such exaggerated head motion.If they haven't been ridden fast and don't have a "big motor" they usually don't have an overly deep head nod. Two of ours have what I consider a "big engine" and they don't do this.And the old style of head motion,old timers of the breed will tell you,is "side to side" instead of up/down.Like any good gaited horse,tho,they do have "rhythm". |

Always looking for gaited people to ride with! Seems I have moved to an area of all Quarter Horse people, whom I love, but they dont want to ride with me, cause I go too fast!

Location: Cherokee, Ia | Well, guess I ride a little of everything, paint mare who has a jog trot you can ride smoothly in all day, my old ropin horse with a fast walk, but the best is our 22 year old Standardbred (retired off the track) she paces, which is so smooth! Keeps up with the Arabs and TWH, no problem, plus when you put her in a gallop ( none of these slow lopes for us) it is the best ride of your life!! Covers a lot of ground and you don't get your teeth rattled at all!! But I DO love my QH and Paint........have ridden them with gaited horses, and they do their best to keep up..plusif there are any cows around where we ride, I get to be a REAL cowgirl.......and round em' up!!!! Had to help our neighbor round up his ELK that got out one year......THEY can travel, clocked them around 45 mph in a full run...........now that was an experience, especially when my standardbred got too close, saw what they REALLY were, and took off back to the trailer with an 2 yr old bull calf elk on her a@#!!!! Let's just say that we covered a mile in a short time!!!! Felt like a jockey that day! Hope it warms up here soon....was 10 below (again) today! I need to ride!!! |

Location: Georgia | I have a 20 yr old retired team roping QH that is awesome on the trail. When I bought him, he had just turned 14. He was purchased to help me regain by confidence and he did a wonderful job. I also have a 10 yr old "thowaway" apploosa. He was a rescue horse and he is just too much fun. He was a bag of bones when I got him as a coming 5 year old. He has more personality than should be allowed for any one horse. He also has a very smooth trot and lope too.
