I changed the thread title because my question has changed.  The answer to the trade question was NO, so I posted a new question a few replies down.  :)

Old question:

I've been offered a 1997 Monarch 2h SL BP trailer in trade for my 1997 Bonanza 4h GN steel stock trailer.  I want a gooseneck slant or stock/combo, so the only reason I'd take a trade is if I could sell the next trailer for more than this one.  Would you do the trade?

Here's what the owner has to say about her trailer:  "It has new tires on it and wiring is all working lights inside Has a tack room.  also has doors that close in the top on the back just haven't got them on."

Here's my trailer, BEFORE I added the new hemlock floor, Lexan in the front stall, "Safety Pen" travel corral, spare tire, and 4 new tires.  I will say the surface rust is a tad worse now, 2 years later.

Would YOU trade?

That's a no brainer...............No. IMHO The stock trailer will be much easier to sell than "that" bumper pull pictured.

Thank you very much.  I've done very little buying and selling so I really didn't know which would be easier to sell, let alone which would be worth more.

New question... what would you list my stock trailer for, if it were yours?  (I know it varies by state.)  The specs are:

  • 16' on the floor
  • Center cut gate, sliding calf gate in rear swing door, swing-down hay gate in nose
  • Brakes on both axles
  • Interior lights
  • New rough-hewn hemlock floors in 2006 (which have been protected by *gasp* used motor oil)
  • Four new TRAILER tires (not passenger) in 2006
  • Lexan permanently installed on the front stall (not pretty but effective)
  • "Safety Pen" travel corral (cost me $900 when new)
  • Average condition for that age, with some surface rust

I've already got a price in mind but any input you can give would be FABULOUS.   I'd like to sell it relatively quickly.

No way would I trade for the 2H. What you have is a more universally usable trailer. If you are looking to sell outright, I would like to think $2,500-$3,000 would be a good place to start, but would probably take $2,200. If you find another trailer you like and want to trade, I would think $3,000 depending on the value of what you are looking for. You've got a fairly good general livestock trailer now because of the center gate and the rear gate. Especially good for hogs or sheep, so I would try to sell it that way rather than as a horse trailer. Good luck!

were are you located at?

I buy and sell metal trailers and i don't know were you are located but here in alabama the gooseneck would sell for 1800.00-2300.00 depending on quality.I buy trailers in pretty much any shape i also sandblast, paint, fix the rust outs and resale as far as that bumper pull i wouldn't give over 800.00-900.00 and have to fix it. What type of trailer are you looking for i may have it.

I think you have a safer pull with your gooseneck stocktrailer... and a lot more room for hauling. That 2hrse BP looks really tired. I know its nice to have a smaller trailer for vet or "day" trips with your horse too... look for one that is really tight and has a good floor and no rust.

Thanks for your suggestions everyone, it seems clear that my asking price is definitely not too low.  :)  I'm in Maine.  Around here it's hard to find ANY trailer used, but this type is almost never available.  Because of that, I've listed it at $4000 and I got several offers to trade (all denied) and one offer to make payments for the next 6 weeks.  I'll likely take that offer, with the standard precautionary written agreement and such.  Thanks for all your help!!
