I have a sacrifice lot(dirt lot) It is fenced with oak board fencing.I keep a round bale of hay with water and salt dwon there at all times. However my 2 horses are chewing my fence! I have electric around the top board ,but they are chewing the bottom board!I am getting ready to put electric along the bottom also.I know that the horses are probally board they are in the lot pretty much 24/7 now that it is winter, and there is nothing in my field for them to eat.I do bring them in thier stalls for a few hours in the morn & evening to be fed. Then they go back out.Any other sugestions?

More electric or a round bale or two to keep them busy.

I saw a guy rub a bar of dial soap along the edge of the boards in the stalls at our barn to keep the horses from chewing the wood. He was careful to use a bar that was a little soft, like it'd already been used in the shower a few days. It worked every time. The horses really didn't like the soap taste :) I tried in on an outside stair rail that my dog was chewing. Problem solved! The dog didn't like it either :) *

We do the Ivory soap bar thing, also. But can't do it anywhere that it could possibly get to the pond or the creek. We have also used pepper spray with good results.

hot hot sauce on boards or trees works good too.  cajaun pepper works too.  You may want to add a supplement and a mineral salt block.  Have any horse toys you can put out there

try some music

The hot sauce works well.  I mix up hot sauce, dish soap and water in my pump sprayer to spray the willows in the summer, too (and it keeps deer outta your garden).

We use waste oil on our post & rail fence.  Shhh - don't tell the DNR.

I tried many formulas and still found the Dark Chew Stop lasted and worked better then used oil etc.Except of course on live plants etc. A big brush and paint it on.

Thanks for all the advice.I went ahead and put electric on all 3 boards. That has stopped them! ,but now they are chewing down my run in.I have a mare ,and her 4 yr old daughter. The mare has chewed wood in the past ,but not alot.I think she has taught her daughter this and she is the one being persistent about it.I think she is obsessive compulsive!I'll have to get some of the chew stop paint for my run in.

I discovered that euthanizing the culprit doing the chewing solves the problem. Sorry, couldn't resist.

Kinda drastic isn't it? Some folks would be horseless! Heck I had to paint some of the rafters in my barn over a 16 plus hand Saddlebred mare.Thought she was a darn Giraffe Beaver cross!

You can try rubbing an onion on the boards - this works great for a few days/until it rains. Dark chew stop works the best. We've had chewers here off and on over the past few years and I found that when I was top dressing their feed with Source that they had no interest in chewing. Nothing else had changed in their diet, pen situation, etc... (they even had free choice mineral block). Just an observation.
