Location: East Tennessee, USA, Planet Earth | >> I must be super in the dark...but what has that got to do with when you geld???Some believe that if you geld during certain moon phase...I think it's after the full moon. The colt will have less bleeding, and heal quicker. Same for weaning. The Farmers Almanac lists monthly dates for doing certain chores. It's all based on Moon phases and tides....when the moon is located in certain place in the Zodiac. The best day to geld in January are 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12. |

Location: Stem NC | Does anyone know where I can see a calendar with the daily signs on it like in the feet, head etc? Just the pictures of the moon phases doesn't help me. The only time I look for one is when I geld. I have always gelded with the signs and never had trouble. |

Location: West TN | We cut by the signs..... We have a guy to do this for us.. I will call him tomorrow if no one posts and give you the dates. I have had a vet geld when the signs were high and close to the heart and he bled for days. Not sure where the superstition lies, but my grandfather has passed it down in the generations with his beliefs of how it works and I go with that experience of countless decades. |

Location: Southern New Mexico | It the farmers almanac type of stuff. Better to plant at this phase of the moon, harvest at this phase, geld on theses days, breed on these days spray for weeds on a full moon and such. I've never paid any attention to it but my great grandfather swore by it. He never bred an animal or planted a tomato on the wrong days. |

Location: Stem NC | thanks for all the help. I have an appointment 1/10 which is a good day for gelding. My horse needs all the help he can get. He has not dropped yet, is almost 2 and is not worth an expensive gedling job. Keep your fingers crossed for me. Again thanks for all the help. |

Location: Romulus, Michigan | Believe it or not, Sable, our horses with trainers in Kentucky have been gelded by some of the best vets in the nation and they also believe in the phase of the moon thing. If you ask your vet, he/she may already know. The whole moon phase thing is not a bunch of bull -- ask any law enforcement officer! |

Location: Grapeland, Texas | I am another believer. We always gelded by the moon and the one time we didn't the horse bled a lot. May not have been anything to do with the moon, but sure makes you wonder. A man down the road did everything by the moon, always had a good garden. There has to be something to it, people been following it to many years with good results. |

Location: South of Dallas | I'll have to put in with the "geld by the moon phase" crowd. My friend from Oklahoma told me about it and I thought it was Bull. I had mine gelded near the date but didn't wait. Had some oozing and swelling problems and it almost looked like he wanted to fester. Friend's horse didn't have a problem. Next time I will wait. |

Does anyone know of any scientific studies done to prove this theory? Nothing but anecdotal data... Think of the thousands of animals castrated every year...statistically, some will be perfect and some will be disasters and the rest will fill in the bell curve... Also, I guarrantee the is NO COURSE offered in VET SCHOOLS studying the MOONS PHASES...

Location: alabama | I have heard of doing it at a time called the "leg of the moon" or something. Never had heard of it before, but we are going to geld my husbands new belgian soon, and connsidering he is between the ages of ten - twelve, he wants to try it. He has been convinced we will never have "studdy" problems out of him afterwards. I told him I didn't care, as long as we don't wait long. We will do it in cold weather. |

Location: Kansas | Hey, how's that for coincidence! OK, consulting the Almanac again ( I usually just call my breeder who keeps up on this stuff, so bear with me) for some reason the Pisces sign indicates in the feet and that will be on the 7th,8th and 9th. There were some good links to try from another forum on when to geld also. I tried Google and really only got links to buy almanacs. Good luck. |
