Location: Foothills of the Smokeys | Yes, there are plenty of copperheads at Bandy Creek, but there are plenty at East Fork, too. After all, they are both located on the Cumberland Plateau and are not far from each other. Last time we where at Bandy Creek in early Oct., our group saw 2on the same night in the campground. Both were seen after dark. They were on the pavement trying to get warm. In fact,a small one of them was in my campsite.
It's the ones you don't see that you have to worry about. I highly suggest that if you are out walking after dark, you use a flashlight and wear enclosed shoes or boots, not sandles or flop-flops. Unlike rattlers, copperheads strike very low. As the weather cools, they will go into hibernation. |
