4 Found Dead In Horse Trailer Near Alliant Energy Center
Dane County Authorities Investigate Scene

UPDATED: 12:33 pm CDT October 12, 2007

MADISON, Wis. -- Four people were discovered dead inside a horse trailer at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison on Friday morning.

Authorities said that the four -- two adults and two children -- succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning. The trailer apparently had a sleeping compartment in it, WISC-TV reported. Dane County coroner John Stanley confirmed that the victims died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Currently, the World Clydesdale Show is under way at the Alliant Energy Center, WISC-TV reported.

Authorities said that some kind of gas-powered heater was being used to heat the sleeping quarters.

Stanley said that they're still trying to reach the parents connected to the incident and authorities won't release more details until they reach the parents connected to the incident.

Officials said that a family member found the victims and called authorities around 7:45 a.m.

Town of Madison Fire Chief Dave Bloom said that it appears there were significant carbon monoxide levels in the trailer when they arrived. He said that a roof vent was open in the trailer, but that it isn't sufficient ventilation because carbon monoxide gas hangs low to the ground, WISC-TV reported.

Don Langille, an official with the Clydsdale Breeders Association of the United States, said that he knew the victims, calling them "a great family." He said that the family was long-time, well-known exhibitors of Clydesdale horses.

He said that everyone at the show was deeply saddened by the tragedy and he believes the competitors would want the show to go on. , so that's what they're going to do. He calls them "a great family."

Stanley said that the four are from central Wisconsin.

The horse show, which boasts that its the world's first and largest Clydesdale show, goes through Sunday. More than 600 horses are involved in the competition, WISC-TV reported.

The event draws between 10,000 and 15,000 people.

Organizers said that there will be special remembrances for the family at the show sometime this weekend.

Dane County authorities are at the scene and continuing the investigation.

How sad.  My prayers go out to their families.  I definitely will get a smoke detector and co2 detector installed in my new trailer!

This is so very sad and heartbreaking.  I read a different news article that said a propane-powered space heater was being used.  I know we've had many discussions on this board about space heaters in the LQ compartment of a trailer, and this is a horrible reminder about the dangers of CO poisoning.

How terribly tragic.  We have CO and smoke detectors in our LQ, somehow I can't feel very good about it in light of that story.... but if more people take those precautions and lives are saved, the story needs to be told.  Does anyone know if there is a place to donate toward services for the family etc?

Good to know about carbon monoxide hanging "low".  They thought they were safe by opening the vent . . . tragic

Please!!! Everyone, test your co/smoke detectors every time you sleep in your trailer! If the batteries start to die and you are not near your trailer you will not hear the beep that lets you know that your batteries are low .If you have co that is wired into your 12v system it is a good idea to stop and purchase a battery operated detector for a backup.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of these victims.

God Bless...

CO is heavier than breathable air, so CO detectors should be mounted near the floor.
