| Today I licensed a 2H trailer I recently purchased that is a 1995 model. I paid sales tax on the purchase price minus my trade in trailer's value.In my state anything over $1999 requires state sales tax on the difference. I am just curious what other states levy in the way of taxes on trailers.It is ironic to me that: when somebody bought it brand new,they paid state tax on the FULL purchase price.And now I'm paying sales tax again on it even tho it's already been taxed once at it's full value. Not only that,but,I have to assess it as personal property to pay taxes on the thing every year!!! What a crock.If we could really see some benefits from these taxes around here it might not be so bad.Our roads are awful not to mention a lot of other things. Any thoughts? |

  Location: Claxton, Ga. | If you buy a new trailer in Ga. you will not like the taxes at all. I had to pay 7% for State and County Taxes. Ouch!!!!!!!! And if you don't pay it you will not get a Tag or Title. |

 Location: desert hills, az | Thats how they get you...just like a used car purchased from a dealer, the full tax was paid by the original purchaser, then you pay it AGAIN! Kinda like taxing your tax return! Little trick to help save on LQs: have the dealer give you a "split invoice", one for the trailer and one for the LQ package. I ended up paying the tax on 18k instead of 50k. |

| Well,I don't like them here in Arkansas,either.It's 6.5%,and I pay personal property taxes on the trailers every yr thereafter.And if I don't pay the sales tax i can't buy tags for it.And that's when it is assessed for property taxes. |

 Location: West TN | Do they not exempt farm taxes for you? In TN, you would be exempt in my opinion. We have never paid taxes on any of our horse trailers including our C&C with LQ. |

       Location: Northern Utah | Here we pay sales 6.75% tax on the amount you paid. Hence you save tax on the trade in value of your used trailer. We also pay a Property tax each year or no tag. Even if you don't use it one year, you have to catch up the taxes before you can get your plate. Luckily for property taxes they do't pay much attention to the improvements. ie Living Quarters. All trailers of a certain make and model get taxed at the same amount regardless of a bare dressing room or a fully furnished LQ. And since there is no established pricing standards for trailers. The tax accessor pick two or three common trailer makes and bases his valuation on them. Here land values have just soared. The property tax on homes has also jumped. So where you might have paid $1600 in property tax on your home two years ago, now you are paying $3000. Really plays havoc with a persons budget. |

| No,they don't do that here.I asked about it.I have forgotten just now their "reason" (have had a lot of other stuff happen since then) but if it is a horse trailer,they don't.They have to get all they can here,so they can have such bad roads,I guess. |

 Location: Trout Creek, MT | Sometimes its good to live in Montana. No Sales Tax. (good place to buy a new trailer! Even with shipping, see GFK Rice in Billings for Logan and Hart. Sorry for the plug, but those guys treated us right) Property taxes on my brand new $40k horse trailer were $300 for LIFE. Perm plates became law here on trailers a couple years back. Pretty sweet. Course our other property taxes are some of the highest in the nation. They are going to get you one way or another. |

| We also have permanant trailer tags.They still assess the trailer every year for personal property taxes. |

We bought a trailer in KY and still had to pay OH sales tax. Hmmm...maybe I will have to get a Montana address for awhile...LOL. Tax, esp on a used trailer stinks! |

| we bought 2 LQ in Missouri,and when we tagged them in Arkansas,we had to pay Ark.sales tax on the price minus our tradein. |

 Location: desert hills, az | reddun25. Have them sell you the trailer as if you bought it plain with no LQ. You will register and pay tax on that. Then pay the LQ package seperately. SOme dealers won't do this, and some finance companies might not either, but its worth a try. I told my dealer that was what I required to make the sale. I saved thousands in taxes and fees!    Location: louisiana | Lucky dogs.....here in Louisiana we have 9%(which I did pay on my C&C last year) tax on all from food up to vehicles and everything in between. The only difference would be if you could consider yourself a farm then I believe it is 4% but you have to have a tax id and all that other jazz. |

| Well,we have a farm and a tax ID too,but,in my town,everybody knows everybody,including the sheriff (tax collector.) And,if I tried to register those trailers under "farm equipment" they all KNOW better,that I don't use horse trailers in the operation of a rice/soybean farm!!! Everyone dies famous in a small town. |

   Location: louisiana | Yeah...see what you mean. Down here alot of farmers ride their horses to check the cotton, sugarcane, etc. They can get in the middle of the fields to see up close without walking and not destroy the crops like a 3 wheeler or tractor. You need a trailer to take the horses to the vet. Hence, even crop farms can use the farm tax for horse trailers. |

      Location: La Cygne, KS | Here in Kansas if the trailer is a stock type it can be taxed as a livestock trailer. And if it under 12 foot or less, a tag is not required if for farm use. So, stock trailers have much less taxes than taxed/titled as a horse trailer. So, for my day trailers I always get drop on the head and slat on the hip with plexiglass. That way the trailer can be taxed/titled as a stock. And we do use the day trailer to haul goats, steers etc. No way will I let hubby haul steers in my LQ trailer! You can also get tags for a LQ trailer as an RV if it is a self-contained trailer like a RV. That can save some money too. Arkansas is our favorite state to ride in... just too bad you have to pay such high taxes for us out of staters to enjoy your nat'l parks. |

| I don't think they are as hi here as in some other states,esp.real estate taxes.But,to me,paying personal property tax on something yr after yr that has already been taxed at the outset is just a bunch of nonesense. And,it was on my assessment as an "RV" in the beginning,which is MORE taxable.I changed that status in a hurry.I told them,"Who told you to assess that horse trailer like that in the first place?" No credible answer for that one!

     Location: Georgia | In Georgia, you can avoid paying sales tax on the purchase of a trailer if you purchase a used trailer or vehicle from an individual. Make sure you have a bill of sale from the person. But if you purchase from a dealer (even one out of state) you will have to pay the applicable taxes for your county. As far as I know, there is no way to avoid paying the advalorem every year to get a tag. |

 Location: Columbus, OH | That's pretty odd to be able to register a vehicle in one state without being a resident of it. Was it a temp tag or a permanant plate? In OH you can keep the out of state plate until it expires. Then, being a resident of OH you have to get OH tags. Out of state driver's license is different- that you have to do immediately upon becoming a resident. Though 30 days is an oft mentioned "grace period" for that. |
