Can anyone recommend a lock that I can put  on the gooseneck hitch on our trailer?? A $90,000 horse trailer got stolen the other day in a few towns over and got me thinking that I need to invest in one. Can't find one for a goosneck at the local TSC.

Thanks

I'm thinking if someone is going to steal a $90,000 trailer, there aren't many locks that will stop them. Hope I'm wrong on that.

www.valleyvet.com has them. Other places, too.

Maybe if yours is locked, they would take easier pickins!

The only problem with that type of lock is that the hitch can still be easily removed and replaced with another one. Take the handle off your trailer jack or figure out a way to "lock" the jack and the trailer isn't going to go anywhere.

There was a fellow on here that had a trailer stolen from East Fork in Tenn.

I have forgotten his name but he can tell you ALL about it,and the best way to ensure no one will steal your trailer.

He advised me to purchase a wheel lock, and several other things, but,he said the wheel lock is the safest.Wish I could remember his name?Maybe he'll see this thread and show up.

We have this same lock for ours.Husband pointed out that if they really want it,all they have to do is unbolt the coupler and slide another one on and take off.

I already have one like the lock inside the bottom of the coupler pictured. So,all I need is the one over the set screw? I looked at that, but it's hard to picture just how that secures over the coupler without going around it somehow.

Thanks for the link.

Most all of those aluminum pot metal devices can be removed by an unskilled thief with the single blow of a 48oz. ball peen hammer.........Most of those locks will prevent an honest man from stealing your trailer. Throw a spare tire and rim over the ball inside the truck bed, lower the trailer hitch into the tire and rim and.......WHOOSH, I'M GONE! It will do more good to just lower your trailer, then remove the landing gear crank handle. let them try cranking it up with a pair of "channel lock pliars" or a #8 screw driver!

What are you going to do in the case of not having a crank handle? Lots of big trailers with LQ have either an electric or hydraulic jack on them.

Rentento,I may come off sounding dumb, but not being a thief I have never figured out how the H--- dropping the GN hitch of an 8000#+ trailer into a "spare tire/rim" and pulling it around would even WORK! THat's not going to hold an 8K trailer in the bed of a truck,it would jerk the tailgate off the truck, how would you even begin to make a turn with it,and expect the thing to follow?I'm sorry, but I never have got this picture after hitching up a GN trailer and all that it takes. It rotates on the ball, but,in a spare tire and rim?

Besides,if you had a ball in the bed of the truck, why would you even need a spare tire/rim to swipe a trailer in the first place??

There is a lock out there that locks the jack on the trailer. It works on all manual jacks, and will even work on the majority of ones that have electric jacks. It works great, I haven't been able to figure out a way around this one. One of the best ideas I have seen. Check it out at www.trailerbullet.com.

Throw the tire and rim over the ball in the bed of the truck. Be sure the rim is facing downward with the inside of the rim facing up with the ball poking through the center rim hole. back up to the trailer, lower it into the tire and rim assembly. Crank up landing gear and go. A big heavy gooseneck trailer ain't going to jump out of that rim, gives one time to make a quick getaway and hook up to the ball in a not so obvious area. Remember, the thief ain't headed to the scales for a motor vehicle inspection, just a quick get away before being caught. Now you and the rest of the universe knows how to make off with a trailer in less than 60 seconds with all the fancy gooseneck locks in place. Best bet is to leave it hooked to the truck so the insurance co. can find you an entire new rig. Even with the wheel locks, if someone wants it bad enough, they will drag it away no matter what. You can chain the trailer tires together.........That will last as long as it take to cut the chain with a pair of Wal-mart bolt cutters. Just be sure you got your trailer insured for what ever may happen, it could happen to you........Tonight!!!!

As for the electric and electric over hydraulic jacks......Well, disable the electricity, remove the battery, remove a fuse, disconnect a wire somewhere, etc., after you lower the trailer so a truck can't be backed underneath.

I see.But I still don't see how it would be possible for it to turn with it in that tire, but,if it's on a ball,it will sit there, that's true. But,if they steal mine where it is at,there's not too many places more remote than where it is,so,they'd have time to hook it up.

But I'd like to see the guy that could knock that coupler lock off with one blow of a ball peen hammer. He'd have to be a combo of Joe Weider and Arnold Swarchnegger to do it,average person would break their damn wrist if they took a hard blow at that lock. You might bend it a little if it was sticking out there but you AREN'T going to break it,I guarantee you that. They would have to take a hacksaw and saw that bolt in two or hammer that round padlock off,the ideal thing would be to just be able to pick the lock.No hammering or wrist splints required for that.

The weight of the trailer would hold the coupler in the tire rim as long as you don't take off/stop to fast.  My neighbour had to do this a couple of years ago (by my suggestion) because his coupler had rusted shut in the closed position and he couldn't get the bolt loose to take the coupler off.  He had to tow it to a shop with air tools.

I won't talking about breaking the trailer coupler. I was talking about breaking that "Micky Mouse" pot metal aluminum coupler lock thing that people buy and install. That cast metal don't bend, it cracks and breaks. A man stealing something that don't belong to him, half scared to death, in a hurry, if he wants it one good solid swing with that 4# hammer and he is well on the way. That wheel lock deal may very well be your best bet.

Rentento,I'm talking about the lock too.I've got sense enough to know you couldn't break that coupler, but, you can't break that lock with a blow of a hammer, either.Look at the link up there to see which one I"m talking about. The one we use is like this and it is not lighweight pot metal. it is heavy, and no body is going to break it with a swing of a hammer. If they try, they'll be laying on the ground holding their damn arm saying a few choice words and they WON'T be thinking of doing it again.

The only way to get it off is either pick or break the lock which you would have to hammer on IT for a while, too,I mean a while,or hacksaw through that bolt.

But I will concede the point to you,as usual.

All here is another thing to remember.  Whatever lock you use for the gooseneck hitch, also get a lock for the coupler bolts.  This is the 2 bolts where you adjust the coupler.  You can lock the gooseneck nice and tight, however that can be removed and changed within minutes from a thief who knows what to do.

Okay, I just went out and lowered the coupler on my GN Trailer, it was a little short for my truck so I decided to take care of it, Taking that coupler off is not as easy as it sounds. Wrench, Hammer lots and lots of WD40 and a couple of hours later, it is done. Of course now that I have lubed it all up and adjusted it I have made it easier for the crooks to take it, but one other thing. I lowered the coupler as far as it will go and it never did attempt to come all the way out. So I really don't see this as a threat. JMO!!!!!!

I've not heard of one being stolen by somebody hitting the lock once with a big hammer, but,I HAVE heard of one that was stolen by the coupler being removed and another one replaced. They found their coupler with the lock still on it laying there near the spot.Somebody had to be looking at that one a few days prior,I'd say.

We had a GN LQ that had a latch that apparently was bent when we got it,probably happened on the lot being hauled around with a tractor and a boom.Anyway,we had to replace the entire coupler sleeve, and it took my husband about 5 minutes to loosen it,slide it off,and slide the replacement coupler on.

Reasons It took Monsterhorse so long to adjust her coupler:

75% because she is woman
20% because she weighs 110 lbs
5% because she is Blonde

The fact she did it ALL BY HERSELF...Priceless!!!

OK,I see your point,too.

BUt most thieves aren't 110 # blondes that are swiping big horse trailers in the night.

If there are any,and they're pressed for time, maybe they better have a "helper" with them.

Ever wonder why the thieves carry cans of starting fluid around with them?  It's not to help them sleep or to put you to sleep while they steal your trailer or whatever.

I can speak from first hand experience on the ease of having a trailer stolen. My 15ft. short wall LQ 2-horse Elite that we only owned 4 months was stolen right out of my driveway in broad daylight... determined somewhere between 9 am and noon.

Dually truck was stolen up the road to take the trailer. The jerks were caught. Drug dealers of course. Trailer is still MIA. Truck was recovered.

How were they caught.... Never Ever make your girlfriend too mad at ya. The loser was giving gifts from the trailer to her as gifts. She got wise and figured out he had a stolen truck and trailer. Well one day he made her mad and she took the stolen items to the police and turned him in.

Heard he was trying to unload the trailer for $20K. Trailer cost more than double that. So someone outthere got a heck of a deal and they have to know it is "HOT"!

So the point being, do everything you can to stop your trailer from being taken. Gooseneck locks, copuler bolt locks, keyed hydraulic/electic jacks, slope your drive etc.And most of the heart ache is not the trailer itself, but the contents inside... your favorite bridle, saddle, pad, bucket whatever is you love best. In my case, I had many years of accumulated tack in that trailer, plus all the LQ stuff too. Handmade quilt and pillows from my mom.  Didn't get 1 thing back. Once it happens to you, you become paranoid with locking and securing things. It's a sad day today when you can't even leave your garage door open while working in the barn or out in the garden etc.

It's been almost two years and I'm still hurting over the theft. Got my house monitored and wired like Fort Knox. Still get a lump in the gut as I turn the corner to make sure that all trailers and horses are still on the place.

I don't leave any of  my tack in any trailers.I know it is more convenient to do so,esp.if you are riding real often,(which we DON'T) but we still unload it and put it in a more secure place.

Sorry for your trailer loss.Losing a horse is really bad, too! Did you have insurance on your trailer?Doesn't replace the stuff inside, tho. We also keep our LQ locked up,walkthru door and all also.Padlock the outside doors going in to the trailer, and lock windows.Of course, once they have it it wouldn't be much to break inside it.Getting the trailer itself is the key.

This point was proven in a court case that I was involved in several years ago.  The thieves had sprayed STARTING FLUID on the locks until they frosted over. When struck by a large hammer, the locks shattered.  This works really well during the hot Texas summers. Plaintiffs had argued that the theft resistant locks used to protect construction equipment was inadequate. Defendants lock manfacturer showeda video in the courtroom detailing what happens when starting fluid is used since they couldn't use the starting fluid in the courtroom. They didn't need any more help in putting the jury to sleep. LOL
