Those of you that have LQ trailers, do you also have a smaller either GN or bumper pull that you use for trips to the vet, short day rides, etc? I am thinking that pulling around a big LQ to go to the vet might not be very fun, or if I want to run over to a friends house to ride. It looks like bump pulls sell fast, especially the older ones. It makes sense to me but I don't want another payment!

I have a 28ft GN that I use all of the time. I have owned it for about 7 years. There are some places you just can't go with it and you have to be careful about the lay of the land when you pull it as well as turn around space. I have been stuck in the forest and had to have someone pull me out backwards. Not fun. (and also a long story)

For me, anything 20ft or less is a get around trailer. I would like to get a 2H bumper pull or GN for day trips.

FWIW,

Happy Trails

We've got 2 smaller trailers,a BP stock 18' 3H slant,we got it at a bargain. And I got an aluminum 2H slant Sooner BP recently with a small dressing room for shows, ect.(Local shows.) I want a BP because it is a lot easier for me to hook up in case of an emergency trip to the vet.Look around on the ads and in papers,BP's come up from time to time and are very reasonable sometimes as long as they are in good shape.

We have a 20' GN stock trailer we use for day rides with multiple animals, ('course, we have cattle too)  and also a BP 2 horse for quick runs to the vet, day trips.  I also always use it if doing a search and rescue, as one never knows the tiny pull off areas we are sometimes forced to park in.  Would love to take the LQ every time, but that just would not work....

We have a 3H slant with a mini-LQ for camping and a 4H stock that goes everywhere else.  It is handy for trips to the vet or day riding.  It can also be used to haul hay, 4-wheelers, lawnmowers, etc.  I have even used it as a "moving van" for several friends and relatives.  It's a lot easier to load heavy appliances and large furniture into that trailer than trying to heft them into the back of a pickup truck.  It's probably 30 years old and ugly as sin, but it's worth it's weight in gold!

Keep your eye out for an older stock trailer.  We gave less than $2000 for ours and it has been worth every penny.  And you'll save the wear and tear on your good trailer.

RIDE ON!

We have a long Sidekick LQ center tack 3 horse which is great for trips and extended weekends. It is the wrong trailer for quick hook ups and many secondary roads. We also kept our BP 18' three horse stock trailer which was used for local events, quick hauls to vets, furniture, tractors etc. It remained our workhorse.

This summer my wife and daughter went to a local show where the Sidekick would have been difficult to maneuver and park. The bathroom sanitary conditions were abhorrent. They took the BP  which didn't have a porta poty, storage, air or sleeping capabilities.

Afterward we bought an Exiis three horse with a Sierra weekender package. The box length is the same as our stock trailer, I like the goose hook up better, and it has all the amenities we want for one or two day shows. The steel stock trailer took constant maintenance to look good, the aluminum trailer much less.

One long heavy LQ trailer is not a good choice for us, a second shorter trailer is a necessity. We are very pleased with this combination.

It seems that other people also enjoy using two trailers. I would highly recommend this choice. Best of luck

I rarely have the need for another trailer ( we do have one, a stock trailer for the cattle). I don't haul the horse to the vet,I can still go to a small show with my LQ and I don't do one day trips to see a pal or a trail ride. My LQ is about 27' long which doesn't make it a moster rig, so I can manage to get in and out of just about anywhere. A second trailer make sense IF you're going to need it more than the occasional here and there. I'd be looking for something used and cheap.

Thanks for the tips. I have found a 2H straight Load Trail-Et for $2200. It is a 1986 model. I was worried about the age of it, but it sounds like I might have found a deal! Did you replace the floor in yours when you got it? Does a trailer that old have electric brakes?

Kind of off topic, but what do you think of your sidekick? I found one on this site that seems really nice & great quality but I honestly have never heard of that company before.

Thanks for the tips. I am thinking a BP or smaller GN is a must!

the Trail-et should have electric brakes, BTW,

I haul a porta-potty in the nose cone of the goose neck stock trailer, set it down in the floor after unloading the horses/mules, and if need be use it there.  I too have stories of bathroom issues  (one of which is do NOT eat a nice luscious meal of ham and bean soup the night before a show....)

I have a big LQ and a 14' stock BP steel Adam- for days rides or short trips.  Although I have taken it on longer trips.  Just the week before last I towed it 2600 miles.

Having 2 comes in handy.

Sidekick trailers don't seem to be well known or in a large supply. We bought ours used when searching for new LQ units. This one has a Showtime interior, nice floorplan and all the amenities. It is all aluminum except for a fiberglass roof panel, built like a tank, everything double walled and insulated, heavy hardware, axles etc.  We like it a lot.

I would not recommend any used Trailet. Check the frame for rust, the hinges and hardware if they work. The flooring needs constant inspection for integrity and rot. The axles, wheels and tires were light weight and some of the earlier ones did not have brakes on both axles.

There are many good used trailers out there. There should be more now that show season is winding down and school is back in sesson. The prices typically drop in the Fall, bounce back in the Spring

Best of luck

Good to know about the Trailet. In pictures they look like a decent trailer. How do I tell if both axles have brakes?

The Sidekick we saw on line had a very nice floor plan w/ a ton of counter space which you don't see in most trailers.

You have to crawl underneath the trailer and see if there are any wires going to the backing plates. Wiring to both axles is what you're looking for. Make sure the wiring isn't broken or damaged and is secured to the frame.

A mirror and good flashlight will also help. Take a piece of cardboard or carpeting to lay on while you check out the brakes, entire frame and welds.

Before you leave, check the brakes electrically with your truck. Don't go on the road until they work.

Best of luck

Just got an e-mail from the seller...there is a short in the brakes. So what does that mean? I would need to get them replaced?

Hi Reddun - I just purchased a 2001 Sidekick 3Hs 8'w 81/2' sW.  I had never heard of them either. However, the trailer dealer that I do business w/. Says this was a heavy built structurally sound trailer.  My husband and some other men who know trailer welds, and such, said this is a well built trailer.  I was scared how it would pull - it pulls great and not heavy at all.  I havea Dodge deisel dually it starts out great, no hard pulling, the interior is beautiful and so far I have been very impressed with my trailer.  Love it!

So is it a steel frame aluminum skin trailer? It just seems like an 8' wide trailer will make our F250 look like a Tonka toy! I'm glad you like your trailer. I am about fed up with looking!

Funny you would ask that! I bought a new LQ in July and by August I bought a 2007 CM bumper pull for exactly your reason....vet, day rides, etc. Boy, was that a good move! I really have enjoyed the CM and alot of folks I know with LQ's do exactly the same thing! I don't think you will regret it if your pocketbook will allow ....mine isn't real fancy...but VERY practical and has served us well...Good luck!

Oh yeah, gotta have a "running around town" trailer.  I have to trailer off every time I ride.  Sometimes I just pull over on the side of the road, park and go in on a motorcross/ATV trail.  Can't do that with a big LQ trailer.  My trailer is a cheapo Ponderosa 3 horse.  Didn't spend alot on it, bought it new and it does the trick.  It belongs to my pony ride business, so I expense it at the end of the year.

My hubby went to go look at trailers this AM. We would like to spend $5K or under for the BP, then once we have a trailer to at least get places we can relax a little about the big purchase of the LQ and really take our time. I would really like a slant load because I am not sure if my new horse will load in a straight load. That would not be fun...buying a trailer your horse won't go in!

Hi We have a 20 ft steel gooseneck stock trailer that we use for absolutely everything. From trips to the vet, brandings, trail riding with friends. It is great for hauling mares and colts because it has a center divider. Horses love to load in them because they have so much room. The trailer is 15 years old and looks and performs great. It is easy to haul and manuever. I also have a LQ that we use to show with, but the stock trailer came first and I wouldn't be without it. We also use ours to haul hay, furniture, ATVs. The list is almost endless. This trailer has paid for itself many times over. I love my LQ but I feel that it is not practical for everyday use. Good luck Happy Trails

I have a little 2 horse stock gooseneck that I use for such things like that. Actually though, my father and I built it and it has way too much sentimental value to ever get rid of it.  http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c160/YippeeKiYo/Trailers/0d8fa74c...
