Location: New Hampshire | I'm trying to repaint/prime my older horse trailer. Any opinions on removing the paint from a steel horse trailer? I have been using a DA Sander with 40 grit sand paper, it's taking to long.Is there an Acid that would remove paint quicker? Any thoughts, Thanks Dave |

Location: Iowa | Speaking from experience, I would use a sand blaster. You can rent one, but if you have never used one, you may want to have someone do it like a auto body shop. Depending on the equipment used, they use sand or a plastic like pellet. |

Location: New Hampshire | Will the sand blasting take all the paint off? It has about 3 coats of paint that I can tell. Thanks David |

Location: Elizabethtown, Kentucky | Sandblasting will definatly take all the paint off. If done by inexperienced hands it can go right through the steel... Just make sure whoever does the work primes it quickly or it will get surface rust in like a day or two. Thats how it seems to be here in KY with all the humity anyways.. |

Location: western PA | We had a steel Cornpro 18' bp stock trailer that needed to be refinished. After sanding for an hour and realizing how little progress was being made, and how inefficient a sander was at getting into the cracks, welds and other difficult areas, we took it to a professional sand blaster. His actual blasting material was glass beads, which is less abrasive, and will not erode the steel as much. Be prepared to spray on a metal conditioner or primer within HOURS of finishing the paint removal. The bare metal will immediately start to rust. It cost $1000 to have a three horse bp done inside and out including the roof. It took them a day and a half. I would have spent weeks to cover the same area, and not been able to do as complete a job. My material costs would have been aprox $150 +, with significant wear and tear on my body and tools. I figure it was money well spent. |

Who do you know in KY that would be willing to do this? I have a 2 horse stock that structurally is in good shape - floors are fine, I still use it. In the future I am looking to sell it and get a 4 horse stock. With the way it looks right now, I don't know that I would get much out of it. It is, after all, 10 years old. I am the original owner. Would an autobody paint place do this? Thanks. |
