Its gotten pricey here in colorado from all the snow this year but I'm hoping with all the moisture here that it will drive the price down to a reasonable range. I have used the same producer for 3 years, grass hay premium 70# average. Last year $5/bale. 2 years ago $3/bale. 3 years ago $5.50/bale. |

Around here $5 is pretty standard. Now that alot of hay ground is being plowed under in the name of ethanol ( don't get me started) expect it to skyrocket the next couple of years as inventory goes down.Rich |

Very nice stuff, if I do say so myself. Just sold some of last years for 3.50/bale, they weigh between 75-85# tho'. We did sell some to a local guy who moved out to Colorado, took 90 bales last winter, bet he raised the price on you guys out there. We're ready for the first cutting this week, hopefully will get 4 cuttings this year, last year really dry, only got 3 and not many bales. This is very nice, leafy, good horse hay,( Timothy, Orchard,Alfalfa,Brome mix) so will probably go for 3.50/bale( or a little more depending on supply) this year too. I can feed 5 horses off 1 1/2 bales of this a day, so it's worth it. Some of these bales get really heavy,( my old back can sure feel it!!) Best of luck finding good hay...............and at a good price!![](http://www.horsetrailerworld.com/forum/emoticons/n1.gif) |

Extremly dry here this year and the hay crop is way off. A friend cut this past week and where they have been getting maybe 750 bales in this field, this year they got 250. Way down, so the price is going up as winter gets near, an I suspect will be in short supply again this year. |

But with the cost of fuel to cut-n-bale I can't blame the farmers. $45 for 3x3 half ton bales and $5 for small bales. Or basically $100 ton is bought by the truckload and weighed. |

Get ready to CHOKE!!! I had to pay $9.95 a bale for 100 lbs bales of 1st cutting alfalfa, and $10.50 a bale for 4 way grain hay mix. I bouhgt all I could get as the hay and feed wanted $11.00 a bale and $14.00 a bale (100 lbs bales) (I bought only 60 bales cause thats all I could afford) That would be understandable in the city, but I live 1-2 miles from 12,000 acres of hay growing, and the brokers have sewed up the supply to keep the price up and the supply short. Soooo I went to the growers and asked to buy off the field, and they were more than happy to let me buck, load, and transport my own hay!! OUCH...MY BOTTOM HURTS!!!![](http://www.horsetrailerworld.com/forum/emoticons/icon_t2.gif) Steve |

He makes big bales with the netting looking stuff on them. That was if people came out here and picked them up, if he moves them to his place he is going to charge $100. Seems kind of high to me, glad I don't have to buy any from him. I get what I need in payment for the grass. |

Last year was a decent year for hay here in the mid-atlantic. This year blows. The weather has been nice but dry. Yields are way down. My supplier is telling me that yields are down over 50% from last year. I'm laying in enough of last years hay to see me deep into winter, and this years for the coldest ( latest ) parts early next year. This spring he carried over a couple thousand squares, that will not happen next year. I got caught in that trap of hunting hay in Feb. a few years ago, never again. Now is also a good time to make sure your fields are in good shape especially going into fall. Last year I strip grazed 12" tall stockpiled fields until mid Feb. ( only stopped because the ground thawed and it got wet), could have gotten a few more weeks if the weather cooperated. Just a couple hours a day of good grazing can really dent your hay needs ( disclaimer : even dead/dormant grass can contain high sugar amounts, watch closely especially if you have founder prone horses).Yikes, sorry about the hijack, should have started new thread.Rich |

Location: Kansas | In Kansas we had a drought last year and hay got high this last winter. Toward the end of the winter we paid $7.00 for small bales and were glad to buy it. We usually pay about $2.50 per small bale. Hay got hard to find and I will definitely not let that happen again. So far this year the hay crop looks good-we have had lots of rain. |

You had better stay good friends with that farmer!! Around here, we haven't had any rain (measurable) since the 2nd of June. Really hurtin'! I guess at the sale barn, alfalfa squares are going 4-5.00/bale. We are baling our 2nd cutting, today in fact. It's really good hay,(alfalfa/grass mix,75-85#) just not as many bales as usual. Will probably stick with what I sold it for last year, don't want to rip anybody off. I still can't believe 1.75 hay! I would travel there for that, if the ##@!! fuel prices weren't so high!! Good luck. Iowa hay (NW) is still 3.50 to 4.00 privately, but I do load it and sometimes deliver............within 20 miles, so it is worth it. |

| This past winter we were paying 7-9 a bale for grass hay like coastal or jiggs. Right now prices are down to about 4-6 a bale. Cheaper of course in the field. We have had sooo much rain that they weren't able to cut( most are on 2nd cutting for the year) and bale for awhile so the hay is not the greatest. Most have had to do round bales this cut because grass was so tall. |

He got it cut / dried and ready to bale and a big thunderstorm rolled in and soaked it. So we passed on it. Since I was worried about iffy 3rd crop, I ordered a semi load from Montana. I got 3' x 4' 1000lb bales of Timothy for $110 a ton. Had to pay trucking cost on top of that, so my total per ton was more like $145. I did pick up 12 Mid sized 3 x 3 bales of Alfalfa/Grass blend locally for $37 a bale, they average 740lbs per bale. |

| We sell our grass mixed hay for $3 for a 60lb bale. That's about the going price here in Kansas City, Mo. Hate to rip off my fellow trailriders like the gas companies does. |

If I'm doing it right, that comes out to 18lbs per $1. That's better than what were paying here. |
