Location: Never miss a good chance to shut up. | The scammers really aren't hard to figure out - once you are aware of how they work. This email exchange I had with a scammer should help you spot them. Enjoy yourself, (read from the bottom of the following thread) as I email "Roy" and ask him about his trailer for sale. My final reply. Roy did not answer these last comments I made. Hi Roy, (or whatever your name is) I thought your story sounded fishy too. But it wasn't a waste of time. I wanted to be able to show everyone on Horse Trailer World (and the internet) the way you decieve and steal from people by using fake ads and lies. I also took careful note of the telephone numbers you used, how you got them, and I reported it all to the FBI including your various names, IP Computer addresses and the servers you are emailing from. I've already tracked people who you have stolen credit cards from and even a couple from Nebraska who sent you $1,000 and never heard from you again. I don't like your requests either, Roy, and I liked them even less when I heard your voice on the phone speaking in a middle eastern accent and it was clear you knew nothing about horses, trailers or honesty. Your family would not be proud of you.
It seems to me like you are wasting my time and you dont want to buy any trailer.... this whole story seems very fishy to me. i really dont like your requests... what i ask you to send me a picture with you sister holding the money you have to give me for the trailer.
Dave Mattern wrote: <meta content="MSHTML 6.00.2900.3086" name=GENERATOR>I wanted to use Western Union but my sister lives near a Moneygram office, just three blocks from the pawn shop where she sold her wedding china. Now the missing plates on the hutch make a perfect place for her to hang your picture. She told me that if she were trading her wedding china for cash to buy the trailer from you, the least we could do is give her your picture to hang where the china used to be displayed. I will wait for your picture. I love my sister and this seems minor compared to the sacrifice she made for me. She won't send money without a picture of you. I`m not at home now and i cant take the picture. also, you said you will send it thru western union not moneygram... which way you will do it? i need the deposit today...
Dave Mattern wrote: <meta content="MSHTML 6.00.2900.3086" name=GENERATOR>My sister pawned her china and is going to the Moneygram office later. I'm sure glad for the tail hooks and the set of trailer skis for this winter. I'm sure glad I found someone I can trust. This is just too good of a deal to pass up. My sister said if she is loaning me the downpayment the least we can do is give her a picture of the trailer with the nice man standing in front of it before she sends you the money. Can you send me a picture of the trailer with you standing in fron of it? We really appreciate your eagerness to arrange this great buy and your picture would mean alot to us. I told her to wait on the Moneygram and I would get a picture for her first. Thanks! As you said, we have talk on the phone and thru email. You will send the money to my name and address and there will no problems. Once i have the deposit i will keep the trailer for you and meet you at the end of the month. Let me know once you send it.
Dave Mattern wrote: <meta content="MSHTML 6.00.2900.3086" name=GENERATOR>Excellent. This sounds like some kinda trailer. There are so many scams out there, I worry about sending my money to some scam artist I've never talked to. But you and I have talked by phone so I feel ok. My kids and I are poor, my wife passed last March, and this trailer will likely be home for us till we can afford to build another house to replace the one that burned down over Christmas. My sister said she would sell her wedding china and send the moneygram to you for deposit. Are you sure this is legitimate? I can't stand the thought of another heart break. The trailer looks really nice. i have both skis for the trailer
Dave Mattern wrote: <meta content="MSHTML 6.00.2900.3086" name=GENERATOR>Thanks. I'm from North Dakota and the snowy roads make for bumpy rides in the winter. It's not unusual to remove the tires and use the new "trailer skis" several times a day. It's unusual to find a trailer this far south with the optional "ski ride". Do you have both left and right skis sets for the Sooner/Sunlite? The trailer has tail hooks to keep the horses steady and manure bags are included..
Dave Mattern wrote: <meta content="MSHTML 6.00.2900.3086" name=GENERATOR>Ok. And just to make sure. This trailer has tail hooks right? To keep the horses steady during transport? And manure bags so I don't have to clean the floor? Thanks. Let me know about these things. The phone contact was NEVER an option in the past scams. They are refining their scams. They rent untraceable phone numbers by the dozens and take your message. Then they call you back on an unlisted or bogus phone. |

Now, with computers in our homes and neat printers, anyone can "create" a cashier's check. Even the banks don't know they are bad, till they deposit them and nothing happens. What makes this particular type of scam even MORE dangerous (to us good guys, anyhow) is that under the law, YOU are responsible for the funds the bank pays out of that supposed deposit - when the "cashiers check" bounces, guess what! YOU get to cover the money. There's no recourse, and a lot of good people have gotten burned on this type of thing.I actually got TWO bogus cashiers checks when I put my car up for sale - both from Great Britain, both supposedly drawn on US banks - one in North Dakota :) One for only $5500 over the asking price of the car, one for $7800 over - and of course the knotheads wanted me to return good hard American dollars for that "overage", and by unretrievable, untraceable Western Union. Yeah, RIGHT!!Bottom line - if it sounds too good to be true, it very likely is! Caveat Emptor.Kate |

Location: Texas | On the cashier's check deal, just tell them you will have to wait until the check clears. That would work, right?
Basically, when I do a deal, it is done the old fashioned way: In person with MONEY. I guess that is why I am unfamiliar with these scam ideas. Anybody unwilling to do business that way doesn't need my money very bad.
Another advantage to the "in person" deal is that I can inspect the condition of the tail hooks, manure bags, and skis. If the skis don't have the friction brake, I don't want the trailer. The stopping distance of the snowmobile I use to pull the trailer is increased too much. |

Location: Lockport, Illinois | Dave, When did you realize that you were talking to a scammer? Was it when he responded to the tail hooks, manure bags, or the trailer skis for the Sooner/Sunlilte. You are the mastermind behind this great website, but don't you know that the only trailer that offers tail hooks, manure bags, and trailer skis is the Blue Moon trailer, and they come standard not optional. This year besides the optional convertible top over the horse area, they are offering a system like the Nascar trailers, where there is a lift for the horses to go to the second floor, and with the basement they offered last year, what will they think of next (a hot tub for the horses to relieve muscle aches) For everyone that doesn't remember what an old Blue Moon trailer looks like go to post #38737, remember that these photos are of a trailer that is two years old, the new ones are more spacious. |

Location: Louisville, KY | That was a really funny one, Dave! I see that you forgot to ask him if it has the brand new magnetic coupler system (MagneTow)...all you have to do is back your truck up to it and away you go...no fiddling with any of that junk like before. Also, as soon it it latches on, the landing gear automatically sucks right up. Amazing. Also, ya could have asked about the automatic watering system for each horse (of course with the option for Hawaiian punch, too.) On a serious note, did you happen to get any idea from the authorities about how likely it is that this guy might get caught off of the info that you provided? That really does take some nerve and no sense to attempt such a scam. |

Location: georgia | Dave, this is one of the best stories that I have heard in a while. I do almost the same thing to telemarketers. When they cann I tell them that the person they ask for is in the warehouse but he really wants to talk to them so could they please hold on. In a few minuntes I tell them that I see him comming but he has stopped to talk to some one and for them to just hold on. I have kept them on the line for 20-30 minuntes before thinking that someone was realy going to talk to them. The other telemarketer fun is to get them talking and put the phone down, go to the fridge, whatever you want, just pick up the phone about every 4-5 minuntes and say any thing just to let them know your on the line, after they get finished with their pitch tell them you missed a point or two and ask them to repete the whole thing. This time just place the phone on the table and let them talk to themselves and discover that you have not be listening. |

Location: Southern New Mexico | For telemarketers...... When my oldest was learning how to talk (and wouldn't shut up) I would just hand the phone to her. After a while she would bring it to me and tell me the little man went bye bye. After she was old enough to understand them I would just tell them there was no adult in the house because I didn't feel like being a grown up today. They usually hung up. |

This trailer was a 4 horse Exiss and I found the same trailer on ebay. He must have copied the photos to barrel horse world. |

Location: Boise, Id | Great to see communication happening. I used to sell on Ebay, had a store. When on Ebay look up the number of items sold, and % of happy people that are posted after item has sold & shipped. Be sure to read the comments too. Ebay changed their policy and really protect buyers but not sellers. I got scammed 2 times, these guys cost me $700.00. Ebay would not step forward and go after these guys. So I no longer sale on Ebay, but I did buy a nice LQ American Spirit trailer off of Ebay. Be sure you can call these guys, ask for copies of title or place of origin if never been titled. Pictures of actual trailer, do some checking. Google them, the place I bought from is actually a trailer dealership in Maine, they shipped my trailer to me in Idaho. The guy that delivered called me every night with his progress. Transaction went extremely smooth. Love my new trailer and saved me about $9000.00. |

Location: Ontario | I was looking for a trailer on a different site. A Mr. Richard Saddles was selling one that seemed tgtbt. Thanks for your original post Dave. I asked about the ski package (being Cdn and all, it get's cold here). He bit, hook line and sinker. Me: " You did not send a picture or tell me about the safety. Do you have the optional ski package with this trailer, or do I have to purchase them separately from the dealer? I need to make sure I have them because of the snow season here. Is there much rust? I know TN is south of the rust belt, but I need to make sure." "Hello,
is not rust, please see trailer ,also the ski pack come with the trailer. The payment and delivery will be made trough this company <removed> so if you decide to buy the trailer i need to receive your full name and address and i soon i have it i can contact the company and make the shipping. and after i can give you the tracking number and the company will contact you for payment. the payment is send in two parts and also you have a trial period of 3 days. The first payment of $2900 would be send at the company after i provide you the tracking number and other half at the end of trial. In case you does not like the trailer or you think some is damage the company refund your first payment and load the trailer and ship back to Memphis, all was paid by me,no additional fee is required. Best Regards Richard" Unfortunately I can't report him here because the site is in the states. That ski package is brilliant!

Location: central IL | Some of these scammers work on your sympathies.........they're heading off to war and need to sell a trailer at a rediculously reduced price. When friends were seriiously searching for a nice 2HBP, I responded to such an ad. It sounded "too good to be true" and aroused my supersition. So since I live in Il and the trailer was in TX, I wrote the seller that I could send my lawyer cousin (who was a horse person) to come check out the trailer and the he would be willing to write up the legal papers to make the transaction~title, etc. I also stated that my "cousin" could also bring the trailer up to IL since he is such a close relative. As you might expect........never heard back from the seller even though part of my hype was true. I do have lawyers in the family and could have easily brought them into the picture. But the RAT was so obvious. Caveat emptor! Please beware........if it's too good to be true, then............ |
