I am looking at a GMC 2500HD, 4x4 with an 8.1 gas engine, 410 rear end, standard 6 speed, to pull a Kiefer 4H w/ LQ. (approx. 32') I figure it will weigh around 13,000# loaded.  Do you think this truck will pull my trailer.  We are planning on taking it to Colorado on a hunting trip.  It seems to be a gas guzzler, 11- 14 MPG, maybe 16 MPG on straight Hwy.  Any ideas what it might get pulling the trailer?  Would a diesel truck work better?

The power train will pull your trailer. But the trailer will squat the truck and overload the suspension /tires.  Hitch weight is your main consideration.

I can verify from experience what Hosspuller said.It will squat the truck, more than likely, maybe be overloaded and heavy on the rearend.

We tried it with a similar truck,F250 Powerstroke, pulled a 23' Platinum 3H LQ.It pulled it,but it was squatted.Looked dangerous and didn't feel good riding in it either.

Too much weight for the 2500. Will most likely exceed the rated GVW and the rated rear axel rating of the truck. Just pulled my 3horse 12ft.lq. Weighed it loaded with 2 mules on board plus hay etc. Truck exceeded the 11400 max GVW by 480 lbs. gross wt of truck and trailer was 20980 so that put the trailer weight at 13500lbs. If you are going to haul 4 horses you will likely be more than that. My loaded trailer put 4400 lbs. on the truck.I think the 2500 has a max GVW of 9200lbs. That said there are lots of people pulling big trailers with 2500's.

To answer your questions, yes it will pull it but expect anywhere from 9-11 mpg pulling that weight and that's keeping your foot out of it. I have 01 2500HD w/8.1, 3.73 rear and 5sp Allison and if I get 10 or so mpg pulling loaded(8-9,000lb) bp I think I'm doing good. Empty if I get 12-13, I'm doing good. My truck probably weighs around 7,200lbs and with a 496" engine I'm not expecting great mpg, it wasn't bought for that. Check http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/index.php for excellent info on the GMC's. Although more geared toward the Duramax diesel, plenty of topics on the gassers(5.3,6.0 and 8.1). If pulling in mountains of Colorado, that turbodiesel will adjust much better than 8.1 will. According to people on that site the 8.1 and Duramax share the same rear axle in both 2500/3500 chassis. The 6.0 gasser gets a smaller rear axle in both chassis configs.
