Hello!  I have only owned Brenderup horse trailers.  Before our daughter was born I sold my h/t to help with being a stay-at-home-mom.  I have 2 horses, a 14.3hh Arabian & a 18hh Tb/Perchron cross.  The Brenderup was great because it adjusted to fit both sized horses.  Oh, and we are also thinking of getting a large pony (12 to 13hh) for our daughter in the next year or less.

I'm changing my ways this time and going with a gooseneck 3 or 4 horse slant (traded the Pathfinder in on a F350).  Half the sales guys are telling me that the bigger horse will reguire taller & wider, and the other sales guys are saying 7' tall and 6'8" wide is just fine.  Do I really need the extra space for the bigger guy?  Will the smaller ones be uncomfortable?  I am looking at some travels between FL & NY in the future if that matters.

Thanks!

Absolutely you will need more space for the big guy.  I personally do not like slants for big horses, because of length restrictions(you can only make a slant load so wide and still be able to stay on your side of the road). I hauled a 17 hand draft cross in a slant once and it was a nightmare for him-he had to travel with his head up in the air and barely got the divider shut on his monster butt! I would reconsider getting a slant because of this, and look at some 7"6 straight loads.

Hi there... If it were me, I would look at a 7'6" high 4-H slant load. It will keep the length down and will accommodate all your horses. Just give your big guy 2 stalls by either removing one divider or just hooking one back. I know a lot of people that do this and it works out well. If you go with a 4-H head to head it is a very large trailer.

Good Luck

Buy a slant with a slightly longer length and change the offset of the stall angles so that you get extra wide and longer stalls. Only buy one that is at least 7' tall, 7'6" is optimum. Any good trailer manufacturer will do this for you.

I thought about the head-to-head until I looked at one on the lot.  What a long trailer!  And I'm being told that it is hard to put a large dressing room or lq in them.  I like the idea of the 4 horse and removing the divider.  I've heard of some Tb race farms in Ocala that use only stock type trailers for their horses so they can have like a box stall to travel in.  Too many options to consider!!!  And I thought this would be fun and easy, ha-ha-ha!

EquiSpirit and a few others are making a 3 horse that is 2 stall straight load and 1 slant or box ahead of the straight stalls ( can't remember, check their website). The lengths are still reasonable and might work well for you when adding the pony. Rich.

Ditto on the taller and longer trailer - I have a 2H BP that is 7'9" tall and I have hauled quite a few drafts and 17+ hand warmbloods in it and they all fit, though one TB needed the divider left open due to his length.

Ha, I too have a smaller horse and a draft cross.  The bottom line is really the stall size- my smaller horse is also long backed, my larger isn't but is close to 17 hands.  The straight loads almost always work for the big ones but Ihad concerns about weight distribution hauling just him. So, ended up with a slant with the largest stall I could find-he has room to spare.  I also like the idea of utilizing it as a box stall if desired- which the mare loves.  I have found the 7 foot to be fine for him-guess it depends on how high headed your horse is.

Would definately not buy a slant without true dimensions!  Making a outline of these dimensions with pvc pipes really helped me ALOT.  Good luck!

Hi and welcome.
I'd go with the head to head trailer (& I did).
Sure it is long, it gives the horses some SPACE !
If you can't figure out how to get that around, you won't find a slant load much easier to handle anyway.
The "large pony" for your daughter suggests that she will want a horse some time soon, various sizes, growing needs, she may want to take a friend's horse once in a while.
Yep - all that and the 18 HH cross (even if he has a short neck) spells a 7ft 6 inch high head to head trailer, preferably full 8ft wide.
I would say 7ft 6in for any horse over about 16.2, maybe even shorter if it has a long neck.

In the other (size) direction, will you want/need to take all 3 to the same place at the same time ? I know several people who have bought 4 horse trailers, but rarely take more than 2 of their horses anywhere at once.

Hi there,

Yes you are right that searching for a new trailer can be overwhelming.     I just bought a 3H slant even though I only have 2 horses.  My Appaloosa is very long and is about 16h.  He would never fit in just one stall!  I plan to remove the first divider so that he has 2 stalls.  Then the short little QH will go in the last stall.  They both look comfortable that way.

My trailer is 7' high...by looking at my Appy in there, I can't imagine that your big guy would comfortably fit with that height.  Skyler skimmed his head on the roof twice when we were practice loading the other day.

Good luck!  And buy as big as you can...you won't regret it!

Thanks everyone for all of your helpful info!!!   My dear hubby has blessed me with a great B-Day gift... to go tomorrow and hopefully buy a new trailer.  I'm feeling a little better about my adventures in horse trailer shopping.  I don't think I would be brave enough to do this with out ya'll.  Thanks again!!!

I don't think any of the little silly 'Emoticons' can represent the happiness I still have after today.  I have my horse trailer!  I purchased a very nice new '06 Featherlite 3h gooseneck, 7'6" tall 7' wide, 6'x10' dressing room, rear tack.  With one of the dividers out, the big guy will have lots of room.  :)  Thanks again for the replies!!!  Now I just can't wait to load the horses.
