Hey Nancy,
Thanks for the concern. I think my intial comment to her about her horses at first made her mad but then i think it woke her up. Of course I haven't seen a tremendous improvement yet but she is weening them off the pellets she was feeding and adding the Equine Senior feed that I recommended. She has also had the vet out several times. I haven't asked her why the vet has been out so many times because I am trying to push her in the right direction without being too pushy. If I make her mad then I won't be able to keep an eye on the horses, and the Humane Society around here is a joke. And the fact that this person is a MEMBER of the Equine Rescue group around here tells you a little bit about them. SO I know that she is headed in the right direction and is make progress with the horses, I also told her about how I have my horses on Beet Pulp even though they are fat and Sassy,so maybe she will start some beet pulp. She does have Hay which is more than I can say for alot of people around here, everyone is out and can't find any. And I have watched her horses eat and they aren't dropping any feed which tells me their teeth are in pretty good shape.
I will let you know more as time goes on.
Thanks again for asking!!

In Texas our local humane society was a joke and had several pictures and complaints on one lady in our town.  She had an estate auction and the news crews showed up in droves...to report on her dead horses in the pastures.  Imagine not knowing you had (four, if I remember correctly) dead horses in your pasture?  Her name was Marie Wilson and she was big into Arabians, in fact she still is in Terrell, Texas.  Yes, she still owns horses but not in my town!

So, in order to keep this from happening again in our little town I helped write new animal ordinances which can be enforced with a police officer because of the inaction from previous complaints to the humane society.  All people have to do is call 911 or the police department and report a violation of the animal ordinance and any city official can swing by and take a look.  If the people are found in violation they can have all their animals seized and have their ability to keep animals removed temp to perm.  I suggest that horse lovers get involved in local government so that they can help in these matters.

Update!! I went by to check in on my friends horses! They are coming along great, Both horses are putting on weight and seem to have a little more energy. One is still battling an eye infection but is on injectable antibiotics.

I read your thread about beet pulp.  My horses dropped some weight over winter.  I have heard about beet pulp but never was told how to do it.   thanks

I just put my feed and Beet pulp in a bucket when I go out to feed and then fill the bucket with water just to the top of the feed/beet pulp mixture and then pour it to the horses, I donot wait for the beet pulp to soak up the water of anything. Before I fed Beet Pulp my mare would barely make it through a long hot trail ride @ a walk, now that I hydrate her with the beet pulp and water, she is able to make it through a long hot trail ride with a lot of cantering involved. She doesn't need it for weight issues but is a much healthier/happier horse with it.
