In Kentucky it is fairly simple, If your truck is registered in a business name(your deducting it for taxes.) It should have a tag with a weight rating i.e. 6000 10000 14000. Same for the trailer. If both the truck and trailer exceeds 26000lb. you must have a CDL.

There are more ways to beat this than you can shake a stick at.

I see 1 ton dually trucks every day with 6000lb tags on them, mine weighed 7340lbs with a full tank of fuel. I have never heard of a pick-up truck getting an overweight ticket in Kentucky.
